spring collections: vena cava, new york

adapting tribal design elements & fusing them with minmal concepts, the vena cava summer/spring collection presents questionable design decisions this season. while the displays vibrant use of color, the choice of cuts & pieces on the runway come off as a bit underwhelming. while the casting hosts an ethnic variety, i wish the garments were as diverse as the model cast that walked the runway. though minimal, style is projected overall throughout the collection. relaxed silhouettes were a design theme displayed on each look, an element quintessential for the summer/spring season.

spring collections: richard chai love, new york

progressively, i’ve grown to develop a certain expectation of richard chai & his collections each season. while this season’s collection draws you in, it also makes you question how one would define womenswear. oversized pants in iridescent neutrals are shown alongside watered down navy tones as layering appears to be a signature for chai. while i find myself much more inspired by chai’s menswear collections, he continues to steadily develop his own lane in terms of fashion design & defined styled. a great model cast this season, including: hanne gaby odiele, the incredible joan smalls, sigrid agren & jac jagaciak in closing. overall, im still on the fence with this one. perhaps editorial concepts & campaigns will be able to clarify my sense of understanding of chai’s summer/spring vision. a challenge of defined style & feminine perception.

spring collections: nicholas k, new york

presenting a combined runway show of both menswear & womenswear, nicholas k. projected aviation inspired designs in the form of leather berets & boots with an almost soviet union feel. while the collection palette is kept stunningly neutral, we see soft shades of caramel & grey eggshell which contrast exceptionally stylish with the collection mirror-tinted, multi-color sunglasses. the casting was ethnically diverse & the over all style concept & vision was well showcased piece by piece. a great showing of cohesion & direction. a very strong showing of style with a great focus on what new york city has to offer for the summer/spring 2011.

spring collections: organic by john patrick, new york

as a leader for eco-friendly fashion, john patrick presents his SS11 womenswear collection. mirroring the collections natural concepts, the palette is kept simple & all the more chic appearing in oatmeal, cotton white, beige & taupe with the additions of smoked grey & dulled navy. i love the casual feel of the collection pieces & feel a sense of freedom in this collections designs. the use of sheer is very chic & the slouchy fits of the collection will definitely be a selling point for consumers. boyfriend blazers & floral printed dresses were all created for the spring collection, which is constructed of organic materials. while respecting the environment, who wouldn’t with these stylish spring option. an inspiring set, organic & completely chic.

spring collections: sachin + babi, new york

the SS11 sachin + babi womenswear collection fuses flowerchild chic with progressive design construction. while the palette is essential for spring, we see flowered prints with shots of red & fuschia, as well as a few black & white pieces contrasted with a few pale oranges. though interestingly conceptualized, i find that the collection palette takes away from the collection’s ability to truly shine.  while im sure other collections this season will use powerful colors & bright burst of contrast, perhaps this collection will prove to be a separation from what other designers are showing. the strength of this collection is the construction.
