video: nicki minaj, “super bass”

few artists can compete in today’s image driven industry, which often pits true talent against good marketing. one of those artists that has been able to master actual talent & impressive marketing is onika maraj. under the surname, nicki minaj, onika has dominated the underground rap scene since 2007, which resulted in a record deal with lil’ wayne’s young money records. like wildfire, the name ‘minaj’ rapidly spread across america, as listeners on the east coast & west coast alike began to thirst for the rapper called, “harajuku barbie”. with slight hesitation at first, minaj took a liking to setting herself apart rather than allowing her own sound, image & lyrical content to mirror other female MC’s before her. this move of individualized artistry is what allowed her to transcend unto the next level, even before her debut album dropped. with hit record after hit record filling the airwaves; minaj garnered noted success among industry elite & an urban audience simultaneously, for her fearless approach to lyrical assassination & wildly colorful attraction to image & style. holding her own on tracks with everyone from gucci mane to diddy, jay-z to kanye- nothing in this industry can extinguish the musical fire & image expolosion known as nicki minaj. records with usher, trey songz & mariah carey allowed nicki to tap into audiences beyond the rap scene & her star began to rise with her 50k per verse price tag gaining momentum & value with each month leading to the release of her debut album “pink friday”. with an established fan base thanks to her mixtape releases, minaj showcased a softer side on her first major record label debut. the album’s first single, “your love” was never intended for release & actually leaked to radio, accidentally becoming a number one hit in the process; solidifying minaj as a star & taking her, herself by surprise at how in demand she was in the main stream. credited by some of rap’s elite as a game changer & a favorite among teen pop stars & socialites, selena gomez, taylor swift & kim kardashian- “super bass” is the third single off of the platinum “pink friday” & minaj again sets out to raise the bar. draped in color from head to toe- minaj takes us by storm with an array of multi-colored wigs, rainbow dr. marten dipped dancers & versace heels, as her sonic breakthrough of a record brings her & her image to a whole new arena on an international stage. from the opening sequence with the animal printed jumpsuit to the green wig bathing suit scene- minaj showcases her love for color, larger than life fantasy & girly fun being seen in denim cut offs with a gang of dancer “barbz” that enforce the presence & inspiration of barbie. a visual winner in my book, i love the nicki is not at all afraid to be a little quirky or playful as a rapper, an artist & as a dominating female act in entertainment. when nicki’s on the screen- you’re watching her & here she proves to be a bigger force than ever imaginable. from the mixtapes to the mainstream- nicki minaj has changed the face of female hip-hop with each lyric & each wig spit & dyed. between the choreographed dancing & nicki’s recent popularity on the fashion scene, a new frontier for female hip-hop is definitely on the rise. hailed as the new queen of hip-hop, nicki will be touring the united states with britney spears this summer; register at mypinkfriday.com to see when nicki is coming to your city. it’s barbie bitch.

video: jennifer lopez, “im into you”

in an effort to clearly define the line that separates music from fashion, i find it important to decipher which aspects of high fashion influence other aspects of media & in-turn other industries. jennifer lopez is one female entertainer that crosses every line, into every industry & has lead the way for celebrities & their entrepreneurial efforts. from her clothing line, to her lucrative fragrance collections, her additional commercial retail collections for kohls- that is only the half of what jennifer lopez brings to the table. as an actress, lopez has starred in a string of major motion pictures which led to her singing career in 1999. with interests in a number of different industries, jennifer successfully understands the importance of image & celebrity & how to interlace all aspects with fashion. a marketable brand that surpasses the confines of movies, music & fashion; lopez debuts her new single for her new album, love? – which hits stores today. video model, william levy brings the heat as lopez relaxes in a pair of gucci shades under a set of palm trees. her bodacious silhouettte laced with a jeweled prada dress; lopez reaffirms her status as an icon, reminding us that she has not lost one bit of her appeal over time. musically featuring young money rap impresario, lil’ wayne, jennifer is seen channeling herb ritts in the videos opening, seen sexy on the shore while wayne himself makes no appearance. exotic & alluring, lopez is then seen clad in a crocheted/fringe gucci gown with diva-esque hair, inside of what appears to be a mayan temple. from there jennifer shifts glamour gears, appearing in the next scene channelilng a bit of a kenzo. appearing in a turban with bold liner in a phython printed satin gown, the video resonates a feel of fashion editorial come to life. dramatic shots of lopez flailing her satin gown in the wind- every transformative state of a true style icon are seen in the four minute video. a metal gown appears as jennifer lays out to be gazed upon by us lusting listeners as an expected dance break reminds us of j.lo’s beginning as a dancer from the bronx. from the beach to the mayan temple, from the silver screen to your computer screen searing through your speakers- jennifer lopez slays in more ways than one & this video is a clear indication of her apt ability to take it to the next level & show the rest of these fashion & music rookies how to deliver musical messaging. vivid glamour & impeccable style- this is musical messaging.

britney spears for v

shot by mario testino, britney spears appears on the cover of V’s issue no. 70. through sophisticated styling by panos yiapanos, spears appears in designs by tom ford, ralph lauren & ferragammo in her three part cover series. yellow, blue & pink shades are seen as the defending queen of pop returns for another killing season & uses her good girl image to do so. with connections to donatella versace during the early 2000′s, not many can compare or compete with the star of britney spears, concerning pop culture, music & image. beyond the parameters of fashion, britney transcends as a living icon of the american dream & remains untouched as the world’s greatest pop star. on the heels of her new album, femme fatale, britney graces the cover of V’s star power issue & clearly, there is nothing beats spears. as image has become heavily intertwined into the packaging of britney spears, as an artist, we first seen britney in 1999 when she debuted on the scene with her massive hit, “..baby one more time”. appearing in the music video clad in a school girl uniform, the pop scene was on-fire & britney single handedly revived pop music for the next generation. her first album, “..baby one more time” debuted at no. 1 on billboard & reached double platinum cerification within one month. after one year of release, britney’s first album moved 8,358,619 units & britney still holds the record as the youngest american artist in history to sell a million records. through the years we’ve seen britney in red patent leather jump suits, with boa constrictors around her neck & even seen her dark side during her blackout era. as britney gears up for the release of her 7th studio album, femme fatale, the world has come to know britney through media turmoil, record breaking music, failed relationships & meteoric rises both on & off the chart.

lady gaga for i-d

poised to be honored at this years CFDA awards as a fashion icon, lady gaga has made no attempts to go full steam ahead with her intent to conquer the world of pop culture, music & fashion through constant exposure & in your face attitude. shot in this grayscaled image by mariano vivanco, gaga is on a quest to use her new album as a platform for yet another visual transformation, borrowing influence from alexander mcqueen’s SS10 plato’s atlantis collection; which was the platform gaga used to debut her international smash, “bad romance”. in using prosthetics, gaga is knowledgeable in her efforts to adapt bits & pieces from others & apply them to her ‘fame dripped’ persona.  already a developed fashion darling, gaga’s stylish is the creative director of the revived thierry mugler label, which gaga walked & sonically soundtracked in paris for both the labels menswear & womenswear shows. in addition to being heavily involved at mugler, rick genest, the face of mugler menswear, also appears in her “born this way” music video, which is the lead single of her album of the same title. while the most interesting thing about gaga is her habits of constant image hi-jacking, i will say that this cover is stunning & her mcqueen inspiration is well applied. but at which point do celebrities & their labels decide that you’ve surpassed the level of overexposure. from the runway to the charts, on the blogs & front page news. isn’t gaga tiring us as an audience.

rihanna for vogue

through the lens of annie lebovitz, urban pop superstar rihanna lands the march cover of american vogue for their annual shape issue. as one of the most successful artists in today’s industry, rihanna has blazed both magazine covers & the charts in her meteoric rise to becoming a style icon. beyond the realm of fashion, rihanna has demonstrated acts of leadership that millions across the globe have followed. in chopping her long hair & ditching her good girl image in 2007, the rest of the women of the world also took to the salons to get rihanna’s then signature asymetrical bob. that move solidified rihanna as a leader of style & her influence on women of all ages was made very clear. rihanna’s good girl gone bad image took the world by storm & birthed a new reputation for rihanna as she became a bigger star with her bouts of controversy, speculation & style. currently, rihanna has left the bob behind in ’07 & has been popularly rocking red. i love this cover & applaud american vogue for leading the way by putting musical artists on the cover. from sound to image, rihanna is a powerful entity in the world of music. as seen here for the march issue, the barbados born singer takes celebrity covers & editorial features to a new heights as we see her back bend & scrunch her face up throughout her feature. no doubt in my mind, rihanna is a star & once more she proves that. she has been embraced by the world of fashion & has paved the way for other strong women in music. her fearless approach & willingness to take risks on & off stage are what set her apart from many others within entertainment. in watching her perform of even on the red carpet, rihanna embodies confidence & a love for one self that is abundantly clear. channeling a bit of jessica rabbit with slight hints of ariel from the little mermaid, this is one issue you need to pick up. rihanna is currently on tour & has reportedly just wrapped a shoot for rolling stone. rihanna’s current album, LOUD is available in stores & on itunes. check rihannanow.com to find out when she will be coming to your city.

editorialesque » nicki minaj for v by inez + vinoodh

while some readers had complained about nicki being more subdued on the cover of V, for the publication’s discovery issue, it seems as though they allow nicki to transform in releasing a double cover. seen in prints, facepaint along with signature pink lipstick, minaj shines in what she describes as her most bad ass photoshoot yet. while her album continues to remain in the top 10 on both the billboard album chart as well as the R&B rap chart, the cover & wild editorial spread allow more of the public to ask themselves- “who is nicki minaj?”. a stunning performance by nicki seen here & im thrilled to see her becoming even more of a household name, even beyond the world of hip-hop. as an artist, nicki’s style has evolved greatly & though not completely expected, her style remains laced with some of the finest in high end footwear, womenswear & yes, multi-colored wigs.
