SHU PEI FOR VERA WANG, SPRING

a leader in fashion regality, vera wang’s summer/spring campaign is almost as stunning as the spring collection. from vera’s ready-to-wear to her A-list bridal wear, her entire fashion catalog for the spring was shot in this beautiful, majestic campaign starring asian female model, shu pei. as an asian fashion designer, i love that vera cast asian models this season, as this definitely drives the presence of ethnic models in the luxury market. for the past year, asia has had an increased amount of press considering the heightened demands in their luxury market. as a strong point for asia, the throngs of asian designers looking to enter the asian market are bossing up in their appeal for the consumer market in surprising ways.

for the spring season of ready-to-wear collection, wang pulled inspiration from eighteenth century wallpaper. a move which seen her ready-to-wear collection sprawling with beautiful details & combined with waves of tulle, a design signature of her famed bridal collection. from the collections, despite them being on separate divides of fashion; the campaign is a culmination of wang’s exquisite taste. what i love most about vera is her ability to combine sophistication with trend that would be well received by a younger demographic. even in her well versed skills of appealing to a younger consumer base, it never feels as though she isolating the more upscale demographic, or the more mature. overall, the collection is angelic & delicate, much like the collection. the choice to shoot in doors, against larger windows- as you can see the outside elements; provides that feel of spring. beautifully executed & thoughtful campaign. the rise of the male supermodel

throughout much of my life, my world has revolved around publication. when i was younger, my little brother & little sister were asking for candy bars at the register while at the grocery store & i was asking my mom to buy me vogue. my love for female models came first- as fashion is & always will be dominated by women. throughout the 90′s supermodels dominated the world & as a move of opposition; the fashion industry started to seek something different. in opposition, kate moss was discovered. of course, after some time kate herself transformed from heroine chic poster child to full blown supermodel & even walked this past week for louis vuitton alongside fellow runway legend, naomi campbell. throughout the 2000′s celebrity covers took center stage & ultimately gave way to the demise of the supermodel, allowing a-list actresses to fill their spot, unstoppably, with the approval of publication heavyweights like anna wintour. while american publications have led this movement for many years now, it seems as though a shift is on the rise. other european & international publications still opt for the classic cover formula of a female models, while mixing in a bit of celebrity cameos every once & a great while. while 2009 brought a resurgence of supermodels back into the limelight; we, as the public, are still starving for our next great supermodel icon. with the rise of models like coco rocha, daria werbowy, lara stone & joan smalls- things seem to be looking up for us fashion kids hoping to see joan on the cover of vogue as oppose to angelina jolie. while female domination continues to lock the game down entirely, an interesting rise has also begun to happen within male modeling. as kate moss ushered in a new era of waif models, both male & female, this standard has now been shattered. lara stone, fashion’s top model in the game, has single handedly changed the women’s sector of modeling with her curves & cleavage; making goals of agencies & bookers different than in the 80′s & 90′s- boobs are back. for male models, classic masculine & herb ritts-esque builds are returning to the forefront & details magazine makes an interesting cover model choice to represent this shift. shot by carter smith, noah mills of wilhelmina teams with arthur kulkov of request models & sean o’pry of VNY, for what proves to be a landmark move for a commercial publication like details. with styling by mel ottenberg & casting by edward kim, i hope to see a forming pattern for these types of casts. you’ve seen noah mills in sex & the city 2, as a love interest of samantha jones & he is also a favored male of dolce & gabbana. sean o’pry was discovered by nolé marin on myspace & received the golden key for kennesaw, georgia after being recognized for his work with brands like zara, saks, calvin klein, uniqlo, DKNY & the gap. as for arthur kulkov, he ranks as the no. 19 highest earning male in fashion, having landed campaigns for banana republic, espirit, j.crew as well as dolce & gabbana. of the three seen here, only a portion of talent is represented & many more classically handsome male models have also helped revitalize this resurgence of masculinity. male models david gandy, chad white, rob evans, jon kortajarena & david agbodji continue to further allow the world of male modeling to transform & morph into a realm of greater possibilities. these dudes got next.

shu pei for vera wang, spring

represented by next models ny, chinese female model, shu pei, is the face of vera wang for the summer/spring 2011 season. seen here are images that were shot in promotion of the ready-to-wear collection, eyewear collection & bridal collections designed by vera wang. the images are fitting for the label & i love that vera wang, as a chinese/american womenswear designer, has opted to go with a chinese model. as popularly discussed in both writing & verbally during my weekly fashion report segment; the rising demand for luxury in asia is directly influencing the world of fashion. from oriental inspired collections for the house of louis vuitton, to the casting of more asian female models- it’s really a special time for ethnic models & designers alike. beautifully shot by carter smith, styling for the campaign was done by lori goldstein. a fitting campaign for the wang label.

editorialesque » issac weber for british gq style

i often favor black & white photography in aspects of fashion for it’s ability to channel greater depths of emotions. black & white images give that feeling of old world charm & always give off a timeless energy. you can see the grain, imprefections become welcomed flaws & shadows & shades of natural light almost take on a life of there own. such is the case of this spread shot by carter smith for british GQ style, while not the full spread, i felt a greater sense of style & grit felt from the images i’ve pulled to form my own sub-editorial. styled by david bradshaw, issac weber of ford models appears hard edged, well styled & casually groomed in the set, which i respond to on a greater creative level. born in the united states, weber has been seen for iconic american labels like ralph lauren, through their big pony campaign released for the fall & has walked for calvin klein during men’s fashion week in milan this past show season. a great spread & showcased style; with a dope collective of leather jacket to provide you more than enough inspiration to incorporate leather into your closet for the fall fashion season.
