spring menswear collezioni, milan: versace

remaining in a lane of modernized design, martyn bal & donatella versace present their SS12 menswear collection on the runways of milan fashion week. with use of baby blue at the front end of the collection, my heart sank with the thought of how deeply i loathe baby blue. known for palette vibrance & for being on the edge of excellence in creating the most forward concepts in fashion, the latest menswear collection by versace taps into everything i love at the label & that’s progressive style. well represented signatures are seen while the feel of opulence is complimented against bold tones & subdued palette notes, with the collections beautiful use of beige. a fiery hot mid-section of the collection cooled to a set of black while diversification was seen in model cast. overall, the collection delivers at the highest level, exceeding my expectations & proving that the versace label has not lost it’s touch one bit.

collection images: emilio pucci, resort

lively & animalistic, the 2012 resort collection by emilio pucci represents all of the visual signatures i associate with the label. surprisingly wide ranged, the collection provides options for pre-season dress in pant looks, blazers, gowns & bathing suits. overall, the resort season is intended for vacation attire & the pucci label thrives in this aesthetic theme, even when not in the pre-season. overall, the collection is strong but i expect something of this capacity from a label like pucci, especially considering how beautifully every collection has been for the pucci label in the last four seasons. strong set of design.

collection images: bally, resort

with their swiss heritage looking to be refocused upon in the event of switching creative directors, the bally label presents their 2012 resort collection with a basis of clean, sophisticated style. while most of the collection is made up of leather, the collection seemingly draws more focus upon it’s accessories component. though nothing groundbreaking is seen, the collection remains incredibly modern. a bit bland in terms of palette, the collection borders boring in their simplification & void of design details. clean & classical style with modern influence.

collection images: giambattista valli, resort

alive with color & modern in cut, the 2012 resort collection presented by giambattista valli hits the vein of italian fashion for the pre-season. overall, the collection is suitable for vacation wear, while gowns are seen adding a facet of versatility while still representing the formal signatures of design, which i often associate with the valli label. in this collection, i see a bit of vintage influence- considering that a number of the dresses seen are in a baby doll cut. i was hoping for something a bit more sophisticated but can still appreciate the opposition of what was produced for the off-season. solid overall.

collection images: altuzarra, resort

following a collection filled with python skin dresses, i was suprisingly attracted to the fact that joseph altuzarra opted for something much more minimal & tame. while the minimalist approach to fashion design has become the new wave of style; there is a certain air of power in such dramatized forms of simplicity. i loved the collections coats & love the purified direction that has been represented this pre-season. complimented by candy colored walls, i love that different labels are taking a more stylized approach to their collection images- altuzarra’s approach really representing a fresh take on womenswear in that respect. equipped with lengthened design lines & structured elements of femininity- the collection serves it’s purpose, cleanly.

collection images: preen, resort

elusively modern, the preen 2012 resort collection dabbles into current trends with their use of yellow as the labels signature of print is well represented; in an effort to represent continuity from what we’ve seen on the runway. complimented by natural lighting in the collection set of images, the preen label was created by justin thornton & thea bregazzin in 1996. while still a developing label in the midst of fashion’s digital globalization; the collections of the preen label have been described as ‘cool sophistication’ & nothing rings more true to that descriptive than this collection. beautiful attention to silhouette, mindful use of color & sharp execution throughout. a wide range of looks with beautiful details & minimalist design accents.

collection images: acne, resort

continuing with concepts that use bold tones & clean cut, the acne 2012 resort collection is a strong seasonal follow-up for a pre-season effort. while no wildly creative concepts are introduced, the collection still holds an incredible amount of stylistic value in the choice to keep things simple. slight use of print, exaggerated silhouettes & unconventional layering were all greatly represented & thoughtfully combined throughout the collection. i admire the acne style signature & see it clearly translated each season.

collection images: michael angel, resort

a wildy impressive set of images were presented in the form of the 2012 resort collection designed by michael angel. i’ve loved the michael angel label’s use of print & have noted the evolution of this label, in design, here on this blog for a few seasons now. seen against dark backdrops, the artwork inspired pieces take on greater life & become alive in each image. incredibly impressive, the collection dabs into a wide set of colors, prints, cuts & silhouettes while accurately representing style from an american perspective. among one of my favorites for the pre-season, for sure. im consistently impressed season after season by the michael angel label; im more than eager to see what they’ll show for new york fashion week.

collection images: gucci, resort

frida giannini has seemed to miss the mark this resort season, as she opts to present a gold & gaudy gucci 2012 resort collection. while some of the collections pieces attempt to tap into greater forms of minimalism, those attempts are outweighed by the distracting gold backdrop which painfully reminds you of the direction giannini has favored for the past few seasons. it’s a difficult thing, these recent gucci collections- i feel as though it’s either love or hate with a heavy influence of beautiful campaign images. while the gucci collection is among the most powerful labels producing handbags, shoes & accessories collections, here the collections clothes aren’t much in my opinion. while some aspects of the collection allow it to fit well alongside other labels, i love the use of color outside of the gold tones & am hoping that editorial placement & consideration of a campaign are all in the works. not a complete hit, for me; though not a complete miss either.

collection images: sophie theallet, resort

an aesthetic described as bohemian luxe has become the signature of the sophie theallet label; this direction is closely guarded & well executed season after season. presenting their 2012 resort collection, anais mali stars in the collections wide ranged set of stylish pieces ranging from gowns to pant suits. while the approach to the pre-season is noticeably more relaxed, the collection remains in it’s own lane of relaxed silhouettes of the bohemian aesthetic. while i would’ve liked to see much more developement in allowing the clothes to take on a greater feel of sophistication, i appreciate the pre-season effort.
