THE SPRING GUCCI CAMPAIGN

starring abbey lee kershaw, karmen pedaru & male model, greg newrat; mert + marcus return to serve up the spring gucci campaign. under the creative direction of frida giannini, the gucci brand has remained on point in it’s modern branding image. during tom ford’s reign, the image revitalization was seen as all things brown were turned black & all round design elements were transformed to square. this small instance of transformation for the brand drew the greatest form of reinvigoration for the label & allowed it to rise to a new tier in high fashion. after ford’s departure, i had wondered how giannini would transform the vision & overall presence of the company. now, with a few seasons successfully under her belt, i appreciate what she has done in allowing the brand to remain commercially visible in a sophisticated & modern form. the campaign conveys a powerful image of women in a beautiful setting, amdist glamourous furnishings & golden fixtures. each season, im always excited to see which gucci girl would make a cameo & this season, the label opted for two of their faves in the form of pedaru & kershaw.

kershaw has long been a favorite for the label, as a longtime contracted face for the label’s flora fragrance. her ability to draw a sense of familiarity among consumers with her image is what, i feel, is a secret to success for the label. amidst her range as a model, abbey has changed her appearance in going from her natural of brunette to a platinum blonde; which adds a sense of new to her involvement with the italian based label. kershaw has appeared for gucci, every season since the fall/winter campaign season of 2008- which totals to 10 campaigns in the last four years for one brand. an impressive feat for a model as campaigns are among the most coveted of contracts in the business. an evident favorite alongside her, though still a bit more recent in comparison to kershaw, is karmen pedaru- who makes her fourth season appearance for the label’s campaign. what i love of karmen is her intense gaze- both kershaw & karmen prove to be a powerful duo appearing as the only two females this season, sharing the same intense gaze in a number of the campaigns striking images. for the past couple of years & several seasons, gucci has choosen to go with multi-model casts & im happy to see them scaling that concept back a bit. the constant use of too many faces seems to overwhelm me, it almost filters out any individualized shine the models cast can get. heavily accented by gold & natural light with the same powerful eye’s we seen for their runway show, consistent vision is well represented for this season’s campaign. as the collection which marked gucci’s 90th anniversary, the collection hosted a range of architecturally inspired, art deco design elements which are beautifully represented in the campaigns own set. modern & refined, the campaign & collection are advertised beautifully for the spring & im sure that gucci will remain on top of their game in the high end market. collection images: gucci, resort

frida giannini has seemed to miss the mark this resort season, as she opts to present a gold & gaudy gucci 2012 resort collection. while some of the collections pieces attempt to tap into greater forms of minimalism, those attempts are outweighed by the distracting gold backdrop which painfully reminds you of the direction giannini has favored for the past few seasons. it’s a difficult thing, these recent gucci collections- i feel as though it’s either love or hate with a heavy influence of beautiful campaign images. while the gucci collection is among the most powerful labels producing handbags, shoes & accessories collections, here the collections clothes aren’t much in my opinion. while some aspects of the collection allow it to fit well alongside other labels, i love the use of color outside of the gold tones & am hoping that editorial placement & consideration of a campaign are all in the works. not a complete hit, for me; though not a complete miss either.

fall collezioni, milan: gucci

as a continuation of bold tones we seen from gucci during the spring, this season was an interesting one to say the least. throughout the collection we see a noticeable focus placed upon accessories, particularly with the addition of the shades, hats & handbags this season. i completely admire the fearlessness & strong  direction that was presented this fall by gucci. the collection is, no doubt, an extension of the wildly successful SS11 spring collection, which has already been seen numerous times on covers & proved to be a stunning addition to the spring campaign circuit. as natasha poly opened the show, gucci girls joan smalls & karmen pedaru followed; showcasing bouts of teal & blue which soon morphed into grey tones matched with fiery reds & yellows. near the finale of the collection, gowns were beautifully constructed with rose details & sheer textile, adding an air of delicacy to further balance the collection; which was weighed down by heavy coats, fur, leather & velvet. the collection is a strong representation of beauty & glamour according to frida giannini. in giannini’s work as creative director, a much more commercialized approach has been taken & this season, that is evident. i love the styling of the collection & recognize the thoughtful use of contrast & sophistication of each look. models walked the runway with a dark lip, sleek leather boots, sexy strapy heels & heels with metallic accents. the collection is glamour commercialized- nothing new or innovative is seen. while many have expressed a dislike for giannini’s style; revenue for the italian based fashion house has skyrocketed since she entered as head creative & im sure this collection will be warmly received from clientele, all around the globe; furthermore, there is no doubt in my mind that editorial content will come alive with this collection. though fun the set is, in many ways, stereotypical of how one would define glamour. it’s cheeky in some ways & in others a bit over the top- it’s no less thoughtful or uninspired than others we’ve seen. one aspect i find interesting, and think of more when looking at this collection; is the balance between creativity & marketability. it seems as though in fashion it’s one or the other, you create something wildly creative & run the risk of it not selling or create something you know will sell, only to be called a sell out by fashion kids gawking at what you’ve designed. no matter how you define the roles of fashion- just make it beautiful.

menswear collections: gucci, fall

based in a palette of grey & deep browns, the menswear collection presented for the house of gucci was one of expected chic & usual style direction. at the entrance of the show sequence, a suede trench coat was matched with a pale pink dress shirt & plum colored tie. use of fur was done extravagantly well, while the grooming of the collection kept the runway show poised & perfect without a hair out of place. i love the use of color, especially in the contrast of blue against brown. that said, the collection presents nothing profoundly modern or even new- while i applaud giannini’s sensibility to accessories & ultimately in commercializing the brand; here, nothing revolutionary is breaking new ground. a fair collection overall, im sure it will sell well but how is the collection pushing the limitations or restrictions of menswear? from cool greys, to excellent contrasts the collection ends on a typical style note, associated with fomal evening wear, as black on black designs closed the show.

raquel zimmermann + nikola jovanovic for gucci, cruise

raquel zimmermann & nikola jovanovic appear for the pre-season gucci cruise collection for 2011. for those unaware, cruise & resort collections are created for consumers during the off season of our regular summer/spring & fall/winter wardrobe shifts; for those who may be vacationing or looking for new threads in between seasons, that’s the purpose of the cruise or resort collection. as a dominant force in fashion & commercial high-end luxury merchandise, frida giannini is the current creative director of the house of gucci & has done a superb job at commercializing the label even further into the future. nylon dipped & printed trench coats, sunglasses, handbags, army fatigue leopard print & satin jumpsuits all make an appearance in the campaign images, as do last season’s campaign. shot by mert + marcus, im beyond impressed with the concept of using the gucci billboards as a prop & ultimately a set backdrop. represented by DNA models, raquel has appeared as a gucci girl for the past five seasons. as her fall co-star returns alongside her, nikola is represnted by ford models & ranks as fashion’s no. 15 male model. gucci is killing it completely in every way; in many ways they’ve reintroduced the label to a round & brown design aesthetic that taps into to a larger audience that values the heritage & fashion legacy of the house.

spring collezioni: gucci, milan

presenting a warm spring palette of khaki & caramel toned designs this season we also seen contrast of vibrant color; the gucci collection presented by frida giannini is one of intricate design & progressive feminine style. use of gold was seen in the collection as our favorites joan smalls & chanel iman were among the models who walked the runway. i am always very impressed by the attention to detail showcased in design for the gucci label & particularly with the last few seasons. since the departure of ford at gucci, giannini has really revived the heritage of the italian luxury label, in creating more signature brown gucci designs. while im not as impressed as i was the last two seasons, the gucci label is a beast when it comes to maketing & gucci pieces always photograph well. among one of my most respected labels in fashion, a great collection with concise direction, beautiful color story & expected glamour. another promising set from giannini, whom i initially had my doubts.

raquel zimmermann + nikola jovanovic for gucci, fall

reresented by DNA models, raquel zimmermann follows up the pre-fall campaign images shot with joan smalls with these FW10 campaign images alongside nikola jovanovic of ford, shot by mert + marcus, the campaign focuses on the rich brown tones most commonly associated with the fall fashion season, as well as the gucci heritage. we see a reappearance of those geometric chairs in gold this season & of course ryan kennedy & natasha poly are swapped for raquel & nikola. over all, mert + marcus are well aware of how to make the gucci branding image shine a little brighter- the images capture movement & the collection with an elevated sense of style & chic. the full scope of the collection is displayed very well for this season.
