menswear collections: gucci, spring

warm neutrals, cool metallic blacks & orange tones were combined with slight 70′s style were projected with the SS11 gucci menswear collection. i liked the wide range of looks presented for the summer/spring season, though i am a bit dissapointed that more fashion forward design concepts were not created, im beginning to feel as though design labels approach the spring & summer with a more relaxed frame of mind. though much more relaxed, the collection has its share leather & suede looks. denim still proves to be very much a trend even in 2011. much like many other menswear collections, the looks presented are almost predictable & even expected. that said, its a commercially acceptable approach that went off without a hitch.

collection images: gucci, resort

kept simple with neutral & sand colored designs, frida giannini seemingly transgresses aesthetically; resorting to what we’ve seen from her long before the resort 2011 season. while anna selezneva & vlada roslyakova serve as collection mannequins, designs with nuances of black & white almost come off as dull in the resort collection images. never being one to underestimate the unseen, i feel like the images of the garments dont do the collection justice. i love the trench coat with the black upper torso that dips into white print- its completely chic. & while the collection also contains a bathing suit, i find effortless chic in the collections dresses as we see prints create design uniformity from one design to another. while i’ve always had a top shelf in my fashion heart for tom ford for gucci, giannin is slightly growing on me & i find that this collection is promising. that said, i can imagine these garments being shot editorially & can see a lot of dope images.

video: the spring gucci campaign

fall menswear, runway: gucci

neutrals & forms of leather with fur were the focus for the FW10 gucci menswear collective. i love the injections of red, blue & grey within the collection & no one does chic like gucci. at first, i really started to doubt the creative direction of frida giannin, but this collection puts my initial mark of judgement into question. i love the leopard print blazer from this collection & respect that the current direction of gucci really allows the brands heritage & style signature to be showcased. a good collection overall.

is it just me or is it different now seeing the entire campaign? i feel like there is too much going on, yet, nothing is really going on to begin with. the model selection is typical, the only real luxury is the fact that its gucci. aside from that, seeing the entire campaign is like overkill. images for this campaign were shot by inez + vinoodh. gucci ain’t what it used to be.

mark ronson for gucci

gucci-icon-temporary-pop-up-sneaker-store-2
kanye west did it for louis & now mark ronson, dj & producer made famous for introducing talent like lily allen & amy winehouse, is doing the same for gucci. im not trying to start no beef but does this seem like a lame attempt at trying to draw people in for gucci as kanye did for LV? gucci, under the creative direction of frida giannini, will be hosting a pop-up location idea. im not sure how i feel about the concept, though time will tell. here’s what it is: basically gucci locations will pop up in different locations- each will ‘pop-up’ for three weeks at a time per location & after the three week time period the location will pop up somewhere else. i think its an ambitious move, but still- i think gucci is taking one to many que’s from the music business. how the fuck are you gonna go on tour as a high end retailer? thats basically what this is. this tour will kick off october 23rd in soho on crosby street; soon after the tour will pop up in london, berlin, paris, hong kong & tokyo. going off of an icon theme, limited edition sneakers will be sold at each of the locations in addition to the special edition ronson kick. the icon footwear pieces are said to range from $500-$1,400. as for the ronson design edition, those pieces will range anywhere from $500-$600. wasnt that around the price range of the kanye LV kicks? reportedly, each location will reveal another edition sneaker designed by ronson. so basically, its like a tour- but every stop you have another guest artist. insane!

as i said, this is quite ambitous of gucci, but we’ll see how well they do. i know they kickin ass with profits though because giannini has been commercializing the fuck out of gucci. which, by the way, i do not appreciate.  my concern is the merchandising & overall presentation of these pop-up locations. when i hear the word ‘pop-up location’ i think of lemonade stands on the corner of a suburb- lets hope thats not the vision behind this project. prior to giannini taking the helm at gucci she had been dubbed a ‘master merchandiser’, im thinking this is where her skills will come into play. looking to target a wide variety of diverse clientele- sneakerheads, gucci brand followers, fashion enthusiasts & music lovers alike, i just dont see how well or credible mark ronson is for this project. were there no other celebrities left? is this serving as proper competition for what vuitton did with kanye? with the news already in the blogosphere circulating at the speed of light, sources spoke: “we are harnessing the power of the internet, especially blogs and social networks and using flyposting we studied innovative, highly targeted tools based on the customers that we expect to attract.” well there you go, i guess i did my job. i wish gucci would harness me- make sure that shit is done in embossed GG logos with gold hardware. on some real shit, the gucci brand has been in the game for 90 years, they have an extremely loyal base of clientele. or at least whats left of it since tom ford left.
