editorialesque » isabeli fontana + clément chabernaud for vogue paris

beautifully bold tones, sexual chemistry- two aspects of image that are clearly represented for the pages of french vogue through the lens of mert + marcus. represented by women model management, isabeli fontana is seen colorfully for the pages of french vogue alongside male model, clément chabernaud of wilhelmina. as mentioned previously for the issues covers, some have noted photographic similarities to that of steven mesiel for a spread that used linda evangelista. what amazes me is this concept of whose to blame; in my constant review of editorial a number of people point their fingers every direction. similar aesthetics are seen in the work of mert & marcus, as the two have been known to pay tribute to the greats before them. while some question the inspiration as lack of creative ability, the purpose of serving up a beautiful image is demonstrated clearly. both fontana & chabernaud fit well together & i love the focus upon color. appropriate for the spring,  prada’s banana prints & versaces color splash patterns are all seen beautifully throughout the spread. isabeli is one of my favorites, as is clement- mert & marcus kill it everytime. in living color, summer never looked so good.

editorialesque » robin ahrens for wonderland

classical styling, dramatic light- two aspects of editorial that i live & love. wonderland magazine affords john balsom the photographic opportunity to capture robin ahrens of ford models europe to be seen in this trousers & trainers spread. classically styled by way perry, i love the casual aspects of style that are represented & love how artistically these styles are represented. i’ve said it more than once here, allow me to reiterate; with male editorial there is a seemingly larger opportunity to use greater forms of experimentation. because the design formatting of most menswear remains untouched & unchanged from season to season, use of light, placement of props & angles all make a world of a difference, editorially. these aspects that are represented each month in a number of publications remind us that fashion holds a large stage for some of the greatest artists expressions in the world. beyonce clothes or models, fashion is about capturing a moment- whether that’s a moment of trend or beauty. this spread adds dimension to style minimalism. superb lighting, in love with this.

editorialesque » jerry fu + philip huang for numéro homme china

for the pages of numéro homme china, jerry fu of major models is joined by philip huang of DNA models for this he & his themed editorial. vibrant colors & a poolside backdrop are seen through the lens of mei yuan as the spread is seemingly based on a gay couple. i love that numéro homme china is taking a creative approach at representing gay couples, being that many publications almost never represent male/male couples. styled by joseph carle, jerry & philip are seen with matching prada outfits & fedora caps as prints, patterns & color contrasts take center stage of the editorial. everything down to the furnishings appear as complimentary to the bold palette seen in the selected pieces & photographically, i love this editorial. numéro homme china is flourishing incredibly well from creative aspects to model castings in a short amount of time. colorfully inspiring.

editorialesque » monsters + props by wonderland

what yo’ name iz? o’shea robertson, sid ellisdon, taras koltun

through the lens of kevin mackintosh, wonderland magazine flexes a bit of creative muscle for their april/may issue for this monsters & prop themed editorial spread. styled by way perry, the wildly imaginative spread is seen in black & white while the models that were cast are seen in everything from dunhill to damir doma. i love the execution of this crazed approach to style; the props add an additional aspect of insanity that is well-balanced with the dramatic lighting & unexpected styling. though unconventional, the spread is no less beautiful, in fact, i appreciate the spread for its opposition of more commercial editorials. additionally, in response to this post a reader has courageously pointed out the portrayal of dark as evil, also making note that the prop-eye pieces on the black male model, o’shea, perpetuate racist imagery. do you see it?

abbey lee kershaw for vogue japan

represented by next models ny, abbey lee kershaw graces the july cover of vogue japan outfitted in dior. with heavy shadow & blonde locks, im on the fence about this cover; granted i’ve seen abbey kill it more beautifully than seen. with covers, i tend to lean towards more polish & it seems as though a combination of attempted edge & sophistication have failed to translate. with abbey’s blonde hair against the yellow, her blonde seems bland & the eyes over powering. granted that spring has been a major moment for yellow, concerning trend, the cover definitely grabs your attention. is it the best cover abbey has in her portfolio? not quite. but we’ll have to wait & see what else is in store inside; considering how incredible abbey’s numero cover was & how dissapointing the feature spread turned out to be, there really is no telling. im hoping that this issue isn’t as much of a false advertisment as naomi’s vogue japan cover for june, which resulted in no feature editorial. disrespectful.

editorialesque » paolo achisi for sleek

through the lens of markus pritzi, paolo anchisi of ford models appears for sleek magazine from paris france to paris dallas. styled perfectly by isabelle thiry, i love the simplicity in the pieces that were pulled. most popular of the season, editorially, seems to be the prada pieces- which can be seen in the spread in the multi-color stipes as well as the denim scrubs look. i love the focus on american style, despite the stateside & international editorial location. paolo anchisi is one of my favorite male models for his distinct facial features. of italian nationality, paolo’s mother was an internationally recognized model of the past, lynn koester & now her son ranks no. 24 within the top 50 male models currently working in fashion. from his commercial campaign work for retailers like H&M & zara, paolo is a model of demonstrated skill & a recognized face on the high end editorial circuit. love this spread & it’s direction, completely.

editorialesque » li zi feng for gq style china

through the lens of li zi, li zi feng of long teng models china appears for the SS11 GQ style china issue. styled by dan cui & jojo quian, the spread focuses on sandals for the summer & spring on the shore of a beach. creative angles allow this spread to draw focus more upon the footwear as we see designs by givenchy, bottega veneta, gucci & vuitton. li zi feng is among the new crop of asian male models & he’s had noted editorial presence in china with chinese based fashion publications harper’s bazaar china, elle china, uno & esquire. in the rise of asian demands, both in luxury markets & on the runway, li zi feng was amongst the cast of males who walked for prada’s exclusive beijin show as well as a spot on the runway for ermenegildo zegna, whose collection was inspired by the orient. as a rising force in modeling, feng is still considerably under the radar. recently signed to next models ny, feng & his boyish features will also appear in V magazine’s upcoming asian issue.

editorialesque » jonathan marquez for gq style china

with the athleticism of a god, jonathan marquez appears incredibly perfect for the pages of GQ style china. shot for the publication’s summer/spring 2011 issue; marquez appears in this heavenly editorial through the lens of dusan reljin. through sleek, architecturally clean design lines & gladitor style sandals, jon appears stunningly as a superhuman. visually, the desert location combined with jon’s distinct features had my pupils expanding with intrigue; every aspect of this spread from the model to the design of each garment- it’s all that inspires me aesthetically. the styling of the spread pulls you in due to it’s simplicity & the cracked desert ground & clouded blue sky is almost hypnotic in color & in black & white. stunned, i am at how beautifully simple all elements appear to be for this editorial. quite possibly my favorite male editorial this year; jon marquez is also one of my favorites. represented by click models, you might recognize him from his extensive work with the house of givenchy. incredible images, stunning style, progressive & classic while allowing clean & edgy presence to be felt. perfect.

editorialesque » karen elson for vogue japan

represented by women model management, iconic red head karen elson appears editorially for the june issue of vogue japan. shot by daniele + iango, elson appears stunning against a dramtically lit studio backdrop which ignites her iconic hair color, allowing her photographic presence to become enhanced. monochromatic pieces in zebra & striped print with floral accents are seen throughout & elson models each style perfectly. hailing from the united kingdom, elson ranks as fashion’s no. 11 icon. all visual aesthetics taken into consideration, i feel as though daniele + iango are becoming a bit of a photographic one note. they also photographed elson for the summer/spring issue of muse magazine, in which a similar dramatically lit backdrop was seen. while i love the image & can interpret the vision clearly; versatility & differentiation from one spread to another is key for any & every fashion photographer. while i fully admire a visual signature, i also seek wide ranged technique.

editorialesque » godfrey gao for numéro homme china

shot by fan xin, numero homme china cover dude godfrey gao appears for his stunning featured editorial. surrounded by animal print & texture; the spread is a full range showcase of seasonal trend captured intensely in a greyscaled palette which adds to the depth seen with lighting. styled by joseph carle, godfrey appears handsomely amidst pillowed seating showing more skin for the warmer temperatures of spring & summer. appearing for the debut issue of numero homme china, the spread is an extension of what was previewed on the issue’s cover & the end result is flawless. already cited as the world’s first asian male supermodel, godfrey is a trailblazer & i love that he was given the opportunity to gain even more visibility on the scene in landing the debut cover & following that through with an amazing editorial performance. love the spread for it’s use of lighting & exagerration seen in styling. im excited to see what else godfrey has in store, as well as the rest of this issue.
