spring collections: vena cava, new york
adapting tribal design elements & fusing them with minmal concepts, the vena cava summer/spring collection presents questionable design decisions this season. while the displays vibrant use of color, the choice of cuts & pieces on the runway come off as a bit underwhelming. while the casting hosts an ethnic variety, i wish the garments were as diverse as the model cast that walked the runway. though minimal, style is projected overall throughout the collection. relaxed silhouettes were a design theme displayed on each look, an element quintessential for the summer/spring season.

spring collections: sachin + babi, new york
the SS11 sachin + babi womenswear collection fuses flowerchild chic with progressive design construction. while the palette is essential for spring, we see flowered prints with shots of red & fuschia, as well as a few black & white pieces contrasted with a few pale oranges. though interestingly conceptualized, i find that the collection palette takes away from the collection’s ability to truly shine. while im sure other collections this season will use powerful colors & bright burst of contrast, perhaps this collection will prove to be a separation from what other designers are showing. the strength of this collection is the construction.

the men of DNA model management are among the best in the business. gearing up for new york fashion week, the roster of male models for this season in new york surprised me a bit. dominique hollington, popularly known as a model represented by red model management appears on the DNA agency board this season. other faces to look out for on the runway from this agency in new york are; dorian cobb, alexandre cunha, alex loomans, josh beech, philip huang & kadeem fisher are all standouts within this bunch. you’ve seen dorian for commercial as he’s appeared for H&M as well as adidas, you’ve also seen him in editorial spots & one the runway for designer thom browne more recently. ale loomans has appeared for ralph lauren & jason beech has landed edgy editorial spots with publications overseas. philip huang has significantly expanded his editorial resume, appearing for vogue china, GQ taiwan, men’s vogue china & vogue hommes japan. you might also recognize huang from his campaign spots including past seasons for the gap, lord & taylor as well as united colors of bennetton. kadeem fisher was one of the ethnic male models to walk the runways of calvin klein in new york alongside david agbodji of request models, one of my favorite male models on the rise, im excited to see which shows kadeem will land this season. among the agencies to watch, DNA is one of them for sure. fashion week is coming & these are the dudes to check for on the runway.

menswear collections: louis vuitton, spring
presenting an expectedly dope menswear collection, the louis vuitton SS11 menswear set showcases solid style & amazing accessories. bags are always a main feature of any vuitton collection & this season the creative team made many new additions. i love the variations of damier & monogram logo printed pieces within the collection. as for each look, clean & casual styles were done in darker tones. model casting was spot on as we seen david agbodji, vladimir ivanov & marlon teixeira walk during the show. while darker tones took the most powerful lead in the collection palette, neutrals made few cameos as did shots of color for good balance & contrast. green pieces were matched to collection looks as minor use of prints was seen as well.

menswear collections: balmain homme, spring
rested in a place of distinct style & clear vision, the balmain homme SS11 collection is one of my most favorites this season. while further solidifying their own branding identity, the balmain design team continues down a path of cohesion while managing to introduce new style additions to their design archive. kept simple in black & white, the collection hosts slim fit pants & uniformed design structure. aesthetically, the collection showcases a worn, vintage type of look while still managing to show cleanliness in design. a very solid set, a great follow-up to the amazing collections from last year- on-point as ever.

menswear collections: D&G, spring
i was quite taken by surprise by how light & casual the D&G collection for the summer/spring 2011 season. the looks presented represent a quintessential spring fashion sensibility & love how fresh the collection appears. greenery, plaid & crisp whites were all seen within the set. a strong sense of design is always displayed with the D&G casual collective, a very strong fashion story & clear translation of cohesion & theme. love, love, love this collections homage to classic style. classic, chic & fresh.

menswear collections: john varvatos, spring
focusing in on the more warmer tones of the fall, the john varvatos label has a strong attraction to tradition & worn style. the summer/spring 2011 collection really streamlines the conceptual style of the varvatos label. pieces were seen in black, warm browns & shades of grey to further broadcast masculinity in what was presented as strong style. in thinking of what was produced in seasons past, i find elevated levels of cohesion from one season to the next. sleeves were rolled as were some of the collection pants & each look provided multiple aspects of style inspiration. a solid collection of classic style to say the least.

menswear collections: burberry prorsum, spring
tapping into the punk rock movement which started in london in 1974; the burberry prorsum menswear collection fuses traditions & stylistic movements from their originating city. the collection is surprisingly hard edged & still the collection manages to capture the essence of what the burberry brand has become. signature trench coats were seen within the collection, along side leather studded coats & use of suede. the burberry brand is on this unstoppable journey to become the illest of the fashion labels from london. they always take the opportunity to showcase what london is & have become a trademark in style for what is associated with london. a very strong vision & clear translation of classical style & poignant fashion movements.
