menswear collections: ann demeulemeester, fall
by Jeremy Danté
presenting an expectedly dark aesthetic for the fall, ann demeulemeester is one of the infamous, antwerp six. hailing from belgium, demeulemeester studied at the royal academy of fine arts in antwerp, alongside dries van noten. leather, black as well as industrial inspired concepts are closely associated with the demeulemeester label & are considered a bit of her signature. with their first menswear show debuting in 2005, the demeulemeester label has rapidly developed their menswear collections both successfully & creatively. after opening stores in hong kong & tokyo in 2006, as well as introducing a jewelry line- the begian designer is looking to even further expand & has done so successfully. as an iconic designer that has contributed to a radical change in fashion during the 1980’s, the FW11 menswear collection continues to break those creative barriers with modernized vision & sharply executed style. though a bit more raw edged stylistically, elements of each look are still very sophisticated. use of print as well as shots of orange & red allow the collection to stay relevant to the FW11 seasonal trends.
