spring couture collections: jean paul gaultier
by Jeremy Danté
presenting pure punk regality with hard edge detail & provocative concepts, the haute couture collection presented by jean paul gaultier for the SS11 season was one of theatricality. an aspect i love about gaultier is his level of showmanship, he’ll take any direction & sway your perception whether focusing on silver screen women of cinema or taking a direction influence by spain; gaultier’s ability to tell a story through clothes has largely contributed to his status as a design icon. for this show, models you know affectionately; magdalega frackowiak, joan smalls, frida gustavsson, lyndsey wixson, kim noorda, jac jagaciak, karolina kurkova & liu wen all appeared for this over the top showcase of black gowns & mohawks. while i lean more towards the feeling of enchantment during couture show season, i admire the vision of gaultier & can do nothing but bow while on my knees to this all-star model cast. from elements that may not be noticed at first glance to concepts that grab you & require a second look- this set is powerful. overall, the vision is clearly translated & creatively pronounced over the course of the show; beauty elements of strong cat-eyed elements were matched to dark lips- a wide range of element were fused together for this collection. a strong showing for the house of gaultier, a house that i respect immensely.
