when martin luther king said he had a dream, i think he was referring to this cover. more specifically, im talking about the point we’ve come to in history, within that history, the diversified culture we now live in has successfully trickled into the confines of the fashion industry. represented by women model management black, british female model, jourdan dunn appears alongside white, american born karlie kloss of next models ny for i-D’s latest cover series. what’s so beautiful about this cover is the aspect of reality it touches upon. when the camera stops flashing & the studio lights dims; when the set is wrapped & clothes are put back on- these two girls are actual friends. i think so much of the industry, shit, life in general is so obsessed with the concept of competition. those reeling spurs of fights, drama & blowouts- we ain’t talking at the salon either, wear my love for beauty thin. there is nothing more enchanting than beautiful, powerful females that dominate while being able to co-exist as equals in the same industry & share a cover, along with a spotlight & a friendship with one another. here, i wasn’t particularly taken by the nudity, nor did i pay much attention to the bold prada stripes that covered jourdan & karlie’s nude torso’s rather, i smiled & said- this is fashion. as our world rapidly changes through turmoil, natural disaster & manic press coverage all at once- it’s things like this that make you stop & say, ‘damn, look where we are, look at what we’ve done’. karlie & jourdan gracing a cover that is shared is a dream come true & both females are wildly successful in their own right. while we haven’t even entered the mid-way point of the of 2011, this is the cover of the year for me. this is, by definition, true beauty.

as models of color move closer & closer to the helm of high end fashion, campaigns on next on the horizon for our girls. chanel iman of IMG appears for the spring DKNY be delcicous campaign in a suprising solo shot.  shot by nathaniel goldberg, chanel replaces top model lara stone, as DKNY’s fragrance face. chanel has caused quite a stir with developments in booking & contracts since her agency jump from ford to IMG. as you may know, IMG represents the baddest & best girls- while other agencies can compete & often do- there is no womensboard quite like ford’s. in landing a contract with victoria’s secret, chanel has become one of the legendary VS angels standing alongside supermodels adriana lima, alessandra ambrosio, miranda kerr, doutzen kroes, candice swanepoel & rosie huntington-whiteley. in addition, chanel is lands on a growing list of supermodels that have all been contracted as VS angels at one point in their career, those models include tyra banks, gisele & heidi klum. as a follow-up face to stone, chanel has big shoes to fill & does so fittingly. the DKNY taps into a market of hip downtown-esque girls that have a taste for style with a new york edge. chanel is definitely on the come up concerning the ranks of fashion modeling, but will she land more solo vogue covers this year?

appearing as the april cover girl for  vogue méxico, crystal renn appears stunningly in her cover feature editorial which focuses on color contrasts & bold style. through the lens of david roemer, renn shines & continues to take a larger presence in the high end division of fashion. represented by ford models, crystal is one of my favorite girls to watch. not only does she have incredible poise & developed ability on camera, but she’s smart. in an insightful interview done with her agency, renn further described her catagorization as a ‘plus sized’ model & touched on the need for titles as a working female model in fashion. renn currently ranks as no. 21 female model within fashion’s top 50 & continues to improve in performance with each passing month. here, renn showcases her skill to manipulate the camera & work with angles accordingly in order to accentuate the garments. american born, renn can also be spotted in the spring campaigns for both DSQUARED² & jimmy choo.
