editorialesque » tao oakmoto, fei fei sun, shu pei + liu wen for v

for the pages of V magazine’s first ever asian issue, top asian female models tao okamoto, fei fei sun, shu pei & liu wen all appear through the lens of terry tsiolis for this girls on top editorial. poised for career longevity of true supermodels, each girl has had noted success on the runway, through editorial & on the campaign circuit. represented by ford, tao okamoto has been a forerunner as an asian female model, being of japanese decent & having booked every runway show from chanel to yigal azrouël. in the game since ’06, tao is a regular in american vogue & has booked campaigns with the gap, ralph lauren, kenzo, kenneth cole, zac posen & uniqlo throughout her career. fei fei sun is still considerably new to model but has made a large impact on the model front, appearing for british vogue, vogue japan, vogue china, vogue korea, elle china, marie claire china & american vogue; rapidly building a presence on the editorial circuit. represented by women model management & modeling since 2008, fei fei already ranks as fashion’s no. 31 female model within the top 50.  represented by next models ny, shu pei hit the scene & hard when she began modeling in 2007. debuting on the runways of new york fashion week for rachel roy & malandrino, fei fei modeled alongside tao for the gap FW10 campaign & has also earned a cosmetic contract with maybelline while securing campaign bookings for espirit & vera wang. quite possibly the biggest & brightest asian female model star of the moment is liu wen. represented by marilyn management, liu wen began modeling in her native of china in 2005 & rapidly rose to fame working with a number of chinese based fashion & beauty publications, only to become signed by the marilyn agency in their paris division. on the runway, liu was quickly closing shows in milan while walking for burberry & soon the campaigns came crashing in. campaigns with calvin klein, DKNY & historically, her contract with estée lauder soon followed as liu became the first asian victoria’s secret angel to appear on the runway- all while securing regular editorial appearances in french vogue, british vogue, vogue china & american vogue. dubbed the girls on top, their stats & bookings leave no room for criticism or argument. i love the images & think each of these girls has more than secured a future in fashion modeling. appearing together for the historical givenchy haute couture collection january of this year, it seems as though the fashion industry is finally allowing diversity to be represented much more freely. styled by jay massacret, with hair & make-up by esther langham & yadim, these girls should be, without a doubt on your radar. this marks a new ear in modeling.

what yo’ name iz? chen chun, hao yun xiang, juan, xu bo lang, sun ting,

dramatized against a white backdrop, GQ style china presents us with a curiously innovative editorial for their SS11 issue through the lens of mei yuan gui. styled by dan cui & jojo qian, the spread allows the chinese based publication to transcend into a greater creative space, showcasing vision & style in a way that has yet to be seen from chinese photographers, models & stylists all at once. from pieces by jean paul gaultier to works from mugler by formichetti- the editorial focuses on darker elements of style while the models appear as an underground, cult-esque grouping. my love for contrast thrives in the excessive use of black against the cocaine white studio backdrop- i was very impressed by the lighting technique seen; being that black can often times hide design details, here it was focused upon greatly & stylishly. a rather intimidating model cast was seen, as many of the names & face are still unidentifiable as individuals. a valiant effort of creativity & a breakthrough, editorially, for chinese fashion publications. editorials like these are what enforce the fact that fashion is an industry for creatives & reminds us that fashion is far greater than ‘just clothes’. inspiringly dark, well executed & beautifully shot.

fashion on film: the tale of a fairy by karl lagerfeld, part one

memoirs of a gaga: the v magazine cover series

through the lens of inez + vinoodh, lady gaga appears for the highly anticipated asian issue of V magazine. a total of four covers will be released & each cover sees gaga, styled by nicola formichetti, outfitted in mugler. known for her over the top approach to style, gaga has changed our peception of musical artistry & challenged our views of beauty while creating a clearer path of relativity between both music & fashion. while i love the covers & admire the styling direction taken- i don’t quite understand how lady gaga fits into the definition of “asian” for the asian issue of V magazine. granted the explosive presence of asian models in fashion this year; wouldn’t it have been more suitable for them to devote an all-asian model cast for the cover series? with models liu wen, shu pei, tao okamoto & fei fei sun slaying the high fashion scene, an asian female model cover series would’ve been more than possible. granted the popularity of gaga, im leaning more towards the fact that she can sell a cover faster, to the masses, than a couple of chicks us fashion kids are screaming for every month in the glossies. with contents that focus on asian models on the inside, beyond gaga, there is much more of this issue that is far more interesting & historical. a year in the making, this is not an issue you want to miss. purchase the hard-bound collectors edition here.
