editorialesque » shu he for v

by Jeremy Danté

shot by glen luchford, asian female model sui he appears editorially for issue no. 71 of V magazine, the asian issue. styled by beat bolliger with hair & make-up by eugene souleiman & lucia pieroni. a combination of immaculate setting & complex styling are seen as the asian theme of V’s issue no. 71 take center stage. butoh (舞踏) is a contemporary expessionist form of dance that originated post-WWII in japan. originally refererred to as ‘dance of utter darkness’, that feel of depth through darkness is felt throughout this series of images. as a model, shu he is among the new set of asian model talent that has graced the pages of V, further ensuring this new era of fashion model diversity to take place. typically involving extreme imagery, taboo topics & absurd enviornment; butoh is traditionally performed in white body make-up & involves hyper-controlled motion.  i love the simplicity & essence of japanese art form that is expressed & felt through these images. vividly inspired, thoughtfully executed.
