joan smalls + malgosia bela for stella mccartney, spring

i’ve waited practically all of through campaign season & have posted just about every campaign before this one & this is one of my favorites of the spring. shot by mert + marcus, our beloved joan smalls appears alongside malgosia bela for the SS11 stella mccartney campaign. photographed against a teal studio backdrop, style spotlights were focused on the collections denim pieces, signature boyfriend blazers & low rise heels. represented by IMG, joan smalls has had an enormously successful campaign season; appearing here for stella as well as campaign spots for roberto cavalli, gucci & a signed beauty contract with estee lauder. represented by next models ny, malgosia bela is have a wildly successful new year, appearing for two covers for the month of april & landing spring campaign bookings for nina ricci, iceberg, chloe & roberto cavalli, once again alongside joan. both make a fitting cast for the campaign which focuses on fresh style elements & inspiring creative interpretation in the form of textile, collage cut outs. it’s fresh & modern- the essence of what stella mccartney embodies.

rick genest for mugler, fall

as a rising star for his involvement with mugler & fittingly alongside gaga for her ‘born this way’ campaign, rick genest appears for the fall campaign for mugler menswear. shot in black & white, relatively similar to the collections hype previews before the first collection debuted, i feel as though the campaign images make the collection that much more chic. im very about contrast- whether it be black against white, pink against yellow, light against dark or with something more subdued against something extreme. i love the simplicity that is felt in being contrasted to rick’s over the top tatted body. while in the past years we’ve seen male models tap into the tattoo subculture, no model has ever been this vividly tatted & working in fashion. not represented by an agency & seemingly below industry height requirements, genest is setting the stage for a new world of models to open up. shot by mariano vivanco & styled by mugler creative direction, nicola formichetti, rick is the official face of the brand for as far as we can see. while i do admire the groundbreaking move to cast genest- doesn’t he prove to be a distraction to the clothes rather than a compliment? models are a large factor of fashion as they either compliment or take away from the effect of design. one things for sure, when you see genest, the last thing you’re looking at are the clothes. while pop phenom gaga proves to be the distraction of choice for womenswear- is there a greater message at what we’re being distracted by or is there an underlying simplicity that is simply itching to be redefined? all that aside, this definitely gets us thinking.

jourdan dunn + sacha m’baye for burberry prorsum, spring

shot by mario testino, jourdan dunn + sacha m’baye appear for a this campaign cameo for burberry prorsum’s spring collection. during the FW11 menswear show season, i had inquired about the male model seen for runway look no. 16 at the dolce show & look at who pops up in the burberry SS11 campaign- yes, sacha. as i had made a conscious decision to  opt out of posting the previously released burberry campaign images, i am very put off by the segregation that is seen in the campaign. as if black & white models couldn’t be photographed together the campaign showcases a release of separate sets this season. i am not clear what message they are looking to broadcast. as two of my favorite model faces in fashion, im very excited for the spot no less. represented by women model management, jourdan dunn has remained a strong force in her return to the runway last year & the new year looks like the same powerful force; represented by select london, sacha’s star is rapidly rising.

the spring gucci accessories campaign by mert + marcus

what yo’ name iz? joan smalls, gen huismans,
nikola jovanovic, karmen pedaru

allowing us to take an even greater look at the incredible force of the house of gucci, mert + marcus shot an extension of the spring gucci campaign focused on the collections accessories. kept directly in line with the direction seen for the collection’s ready to wear, karmen, joan & nikola shine stylishly clad in gucci threads, glasses, footwear, bangles & shades. under the direction of frida giannini, the gucci label has quickly developed a new set of design & image signatures that are closely related to the brand’s heritage, as well as their new era in fashion. just as stunning as the ready-to-wear set, im completely inspired.

valerija kelava for jil sander navy, spring

in allowing fashion to become more wide spread & available to all, many designer labels are resorting to other opportunities to produce moderately priced goods on the heels of retailers like H&M, zara & forever 21. the jil sander solution to this issue is the release of jil sander navy, which is a lower-priced capsule collection that is an additional component to the jil sander empire. through the lens of david sims, the debut campaign for the capsule collection stars ford model, valerija kelava. seen in black & white with a bold red backdrop, the image showcases that the price tag won’t affect the creative worth of the collection through advertising. while i personally associate hard core simplicity with the jil sander label, the image speaks to me, stylistically. thought not completely polished, there is a feel of organized chaos that i love with this campaign. great execution.

mariacarla boscono + andres velencoso sgura for loewe, spring

while mert & marcus continue to dominate the campaign circuit one image at a time, mariacarla of women models & andres of wilhelmina star in the spring campaign for spanish label, loewe. the bold palette of the collection is seen with dark undertones & chic contrast. while the backdrop serves as a connection to the labels heritage, the textiles chosen for the collection allow a greater feel of modernization. styled by katie grand, with make-up & hair by lucia pieroni & paul hanlon; most everything mariacarla is cast in, she fuckn murders. this season, for this campaign, is no different. a powerful combination these two.

lara stone + alexander johansson for ck by calvin klein, spring

as a calvin klein favorite, lara stone continues her double booking gig with the iconic american fashion house for their ck by calvin klein spring campaign. shot by mert + marcus, the campaign steers in the same lane as the calvin klein collection advertisments, appealing to consumers with clean design lines- with a bit more style causality. fresh design is seen on the bodies of not only lara stone, whom is represented by IMG, but alexander johansson of new york models co-stars as well. all in all, the campaign serves it’s purpose beautifully & the collection shines through inspiring movement & natural light.
