as a favorite face of mine, joan smalls continues to redefine what it means to be a supermodel in today’s competitive world of modeling. as the new face of fendi for the fall 2012 season, smalls’ image and visibility are at an all-time high. last season, smalls was joined by model, saskia de brauw for the prestigious chanel campaign & continues to serve as a favorite of karl lagerfeld appearing for fendi. both chanel & fendi are labels under lagerfeld’s creative guidance as director and those who know anything of high fashion will agree, karl spares no opportunity to give his favorites shine. a favorite across the board, smalls is a regular in the pages of american vogue as well. with recognition from both lagerfeld and wintour, two of fashion’s most powerful figures, it’s very likely that joan could completely alter the landscape for other women of color in the lane of high fashion. with no end in sight & popularity that seems to grow with each season, magazine cover and campaign, i am extremely excited to see the success that joan has been able to attain as a model with undeniable presence. stunning as ever, though not her best, joan continues to slay.

aesthetically, the campaign is not one of fendi’s greatest, but the presence of joan is a statement in itself. i have questioned the ability of karl lagerfeld as a photographer, considering the number of tremendously talented photographers that don’t get the opportunity to work with chanel or fendi, considering his hogging of that opportunity. that said, karl- i have additional respect for you considering the number of opportunities you have allowed joan to shine. congratulations to joan and her unstoppable agent over at IMG. myself and the readers of jeremydante.com have long supported joan and applaud her striking performance.

fall collezioni, milan: fendi

as a continuation of what they’ve been producing, the fendi FW11 collection showcases the same earth toned palette contrasted to bold tones of yellow, orange, green & blue. chic use of fall textiles of including wool, leather & yes, use of fur were seen in the collection which was expectantly strong. designed by karl lagerfeld & silvia venturini fendi, the collection plays with the concept of developed signatures that have worked for the brand in the past. beautiful styling of the runway show allowed the collection to be clearly translated as the essence of italian style was felt. sunglasseses, beautifully constructed coats & color contrasts were headlining elements seen from the house of fendi this season. as the face of the fendi brand for nearly four seasons in a row, anja rubik opened & closed the show. great collection with strong designs, an excellent addition for fall.

collection images: fendi, pre-fall

seen with flecks of blue accented by darker tones of red & burgundy- the fendi pre-fall 2011 collection was kept intimate. a small group of looks representing what seems to be a new direction give slight insight as to what we can expect for the fall/winter 2011 season in milan. concepts were kept classic, more formal than casual. one element i always expect from the fendi collections is style- that is one thing, no matter the season, we are always given style. here, i admire the fusion of both modern & classic style. the palette plays a large roll & though small, a strong style direction is felt in what was shown.

anja rubik for fendi, fall

represented by next models ny, anja rubik appears for the FW10 fendi campaign. shot by karl lagerfeld, the campaign draws  focus through a vibrant interior color blocked set, which was created by stefan beckman. the eclectic use of color compliments the collections deep & rich, luxurious tones extremely well. accessories for the collection are highlighted throughout the campaign, more specifically with the collections bags- which are a staple of the labels profitability. the advertising images also feature another lagerfeld muse in the form of baptiste giabiconi, but little to no distraction is placed upon anja’s main stage performance. make-up for the campaign was done by peter phillips, showcasing is subtlety & sophistication. fashion editing for the campaign was facilitated by charlotte stockdale, whom provided styling assistance for fendi’s SS09 campaign as well as the label’s FW09 runway show. striking images with excellent use of contrasting colors, this is one of my favorite campaigns. through minimal distraction, the clothes take on a greater form of life. classic, simple- flawless.

editorialesque » elena ivanova for wonderland

shot by cuneyt akeroglu, with fashion editing by grace cobb, elena ivanova appears for the october issue of wonderland. represented by storm models london, elena appears fully outfitted in fendi’s FW10 collection. i love the spread for it’s obvious incorporation of fall elements, particularly with the leaves. the tones & saturation are both warm which allow a greater feel of the fall season to be represented. elena fares well in the editorial & showcases classic style with refined poise. a lovely spread to showcase fall options in womenswear. the concept is both thoughtful & creative, a dope representation of fall.
