fall prêt-à-porter, paris: jean paul gaultier

as a testament to his creative reputation, jean paul gaultier is a leader of the pack with an individualized perception of vision & fashion theatricality. this season, gaultier plays with the concept of age & interestingly so. as the world of fashion tethers between age appropriate styling & models on the runway as 15yrs. old- gaultiers takes it to the next level with his granny chic Fw11 collection. models frida gustavsson, karlie kloss, alana zimmer, sessilee lopez, karolina kurkova, jourdan dunn, coco rocha & joan smalls were amonst the cast  that walked the runway with grey bee hive wigs clad in gaudy print, chic coats, plaid & suede. overall, the gauliter collection pokes fun while truly representing more modestly aged designs. i would’ve like to see something more fresh & something a bit more refined- in terms of vision, the collection & direction are translated perfectly.

fall collections, new york: vera wang

the vera wang FW11 collection surprised me in it’s show of rugged & still soft feminine influence. in season’s past, i had criticized what was presented on the runway as being unpolished & unattractive; but this season a defined form of urban elegance is felt. with a dark, moody eye & slightly undone hair fur lined parkas were matched to ethereal gowns & ankle boots that allowed vera’s elegant style signature to clash with the edge of new york city street fashion. i was very inspired by how rugged & perfected each look was- very, very happy with what was created this year, in style & design. all our faves walked for the show as daphne gorenveld opened leading joan smalls, ming xi, kasia struss, hanne gaby odiele, sigrid agren, jac & frida gustavsson, among others, down the runway. arizona muse closed the show in a vintage inspired sleeved gown which allowed the soft feel i described to be felt through to the end. cohesive from the first look to the last; it’s glamourous, edgy, sophisticated & extremely stylish- i love this collection & applaud the vera wang label. here two perceptions of style collide, perfectly.

fall collections, new york: y-3

created in black & white, with red accents, the Y-3 fall collection taps into progressive concepts & forward fashion elements along with a stunning cast. fei fei sun opened the show as jac jagaciak, hanne gaby odiele, jacob coupe, mark cox, ajak deng, frida gustavsson, constance jablonski, mathias lauridsen, liu wen, tao okamoto, lasse pedersen, clement chabenaud & armando cabral followed in the 60 look collection. the Y-3 collection is yohji yamamoto’s modernized approach to design with a usually dark aesthetic. this season, in a sea of black, elements of white & khaki were seen but for the most part, the collection remained dimmed through palette. plaid was seen in the collection as well along with few shots of grey & blue. overall, the collection is one of great direction & solid execution. nothing too spectacular, but it’s an overall fare presentation.

fall collections, new york: altuzarra

urban refinement is how i would describe the FW11 collection presented by joseph altuzarra. luxurious use of fur was seen on the collections coats as models walked the runway in sheer tops, larger than life parkas, argyle & satin gowns. interesting design was seen in the collections dresses, it was chaotic but still sexy- very interesting. a wide range of basic colors was used for the collection palette as shades of grey, brown, red, white, neutral & black were seen with a bit of gold undertones. equipped with a red statement lip & catlined eye daphne groenveld opened the show as karolina kurkova, karmen pedaru, arizona muse, joan smalls, toni garrn, jacquelyn jablonski, jourdan dunn, frida gustavsson, karlie kloss, magdalena frackowiak, hanne gaby odiele, fei fei sun, jac jagaciak, ashley smith, constance jablonski, liu wen, sigrid agren walked leading to kasia struss, who closed the show. a beautiful collection of daring design that allowed sophisticated pieces to become urbanized through styling.

fall collections, new york: prabal gurung

as karlie kloss opened the show, the FW11 direction taken by prabal gurung was instantly felt & greatly represented. a rich series red looks ensued the runways as black & white entered the collection palette. unexpectedly chic dipped furs were seen alongside sheer textiles, beautiful use of leather & impressively intricate details which broke some of the strict sophistication up a bit. deconstructed necklines, wide legged trousers & slim tailored looks were seen as well as the models walked with bold brows & multi-layered nylon stockings. as the collection progressed the palette cooled to grey & eventually to white, as shades of neutral swelled to pink; leading to beautifully beaded gowns that closed the show. creatively, the collection makes a promising mark for the FW11 season & further proves the talent & skill of prabal gurung, who has had quite the buzz in new york fashion circles both this year & last. as stunning as the show itself, the gurung girls of the fall season included, frida gustavsson, ming xi, liu wen, alla kostromichova, our beloved joan smalls, jacquelyn jablonski, patricia van de vliet, anais mali, hanne gaby odiele, valerija kelava, jourdan dunn, fei fei sun & constance jablonski in addition to this season’s opener, previously mentioned, ms. kloss. a beautiful collection of thoughtful & powerful details, a stunning approach to the fall.

fall collections, new york: jason wu

stunned completely, the jason wu collection presented in new york was american couture. incredibly refined down to the last thread, jaw dropping by cast- every aspect of what a runway show should be was seen in this collection. im am beyond astounded at what was created by wu this season, given my initial hesitation at his development early on. wu’s interpretation of sophistication is at it’s peak this season as refined use of lace, metallics & feathers are seen. an all star cast including an opening daphne groenveld that followed sigrid agren, karmen pedaru, ming xi, rose cordero, hanne gaby odiele, fei fei sun, liu wen, jacquelyn jablonski, alla kostromichova, valerija kelava, lindsey wixson, anais mali, barbara plavin, frida gustavsson, joan smalls & karlie kloss with a final look worn by ms. jourdan dunn. based on design aesthetic alone, this collection is a clean cut winner- the cast drives that victory to the next level. the collections palette consisted of black & soft neutrals, with shots of blue, red, yellow & grey coats which were seen at the entrance of the set. i love, love, love this collection & am standing on my feet in applause for the vitality that is seen displayed as the vision of jason wu. new york fashion week just keeps getting better & better- this collection, is the best of the season thus far. an astounding show of sharp tailoring & gorgeous gowns.

fall collections, new york: bcbg by max azria

sleek, progressive & unendingly chic- the FW11 BCBG womenswear collection surprised me with it’s attention to clean lines & soft structure. in season’s past i have criticized the max azria designed label as being sloppy, lazy & even uneventful but this season i was blown away. while structure was seen in the collections use of geometric color blocking, soft femininity was felt in spirit considering the textiles that had been used. a wide ranged palette of expected dark tones was contrasted to use of cobalt blue & neon tones. with models melodie monrose, frida gutavsson & arizona muse walking the runway; i hope that the BCBG label can continue down this path while incorporating new & fresh ideas, much like what was displayed here. strong direction, forward thinking & innovation was felt for this collection today. beautiful design, wonderfully executed.
