fall collections, new york: prabal gurung

as karlie kloss opened the show, the FW11 direction taken by prabal gurung was instantly felt & greatly represented. a rich series red looks ensued the runways as black & white entered the collection palette. unexpectedly chic dipped furs were seen alongside sheer textiles, beautiful use of leather & impressively intricate details which broke some of the strict sophistication up a bit. deconstructed necklines, wide legged trousers & slim tailored looks were seen as well as the models walked with bold brows & multi-layered nylon stockings. as the collection progressed the palette cooled to grey & eventually to white, as shades of neutral swelled to pink; leading to beautifully beaded gowns that closed the show. creatively, the collection makes a promising mark for the FW11 season & further proves the talent & skill of prabal gurung, who has had quite the buzz in new york fashion circles both this year & last. as stunning as the show itself, the gurung girls of the fall season included, frida gustavsson, ming xi, liu wen, alla kostromichova, our beloved joan smalls, jacquelyn jablonski, patricia van de vliet, anais mali, hanne gaby odiele, valerija kelava, jourdan dunn, fei fei sun & constance jablonski in addition to this season’s opener, previously mentioned, ms. kloss. a beautiful collection of thoughtful & powerful details, a stunning approach to the fall.

fall shwpckg: women model management, new york

i’ve never been considered a jock or one who particularly enjoyed playing games, but one things for sure- when it comes to fashion, i imagine agencies are football teams & models are the players. in that respect, to be clear, women model management would be one of the two teams at the superbowl. in representing the industries top women, those numbers include 14 of which are ranked within the top 50, 5 of the highest earning, 5 industry icons & 5 of the sexiest working in fashion. names that should ring a bell for you: agyness deyn, alla kostromichova, angela lindvall, anne vualitsyna, bruna tenorio, cameron russell, caroline trentini, daria strokous, dorothea barth-jorgensen, eliza cummins, fei fei sun, ginta lapina, hilary rhoda – pause & take a breath – isabeli fontana, iselin steiro, izabel goulart, jamie bochert, jourdan dunn, karen elson, kasia struss, kristina romanova, lais ribeiro, lea t., mariacarla boscono,  mirte maas, natasha poly, nimue smit, rianne ten haken, rosie huntington-whiteley & toni garrn  are the names to know, faces to love & portfolios to beat in today’s modern fashion era. packing a powerful punch in every respect, these females are seen on the covers of vogue internationally & sell you the jeans on your ass & the shoes on your feet. established in 1988, women model management remains at the top of their game by way of representing a wide range of beauty. with commercial faces you know from estee lauder in the form of hilary rhoda, women models also breaks barriers for perceptions of beauty in representing new forms of androgyny in the form of jamie bochert or a new face, you might’ve heard about, ms. lea t. these are the bitches to beat. i called the play.

jourdan dunn + sacha m’baye for burberry prorsum, spring

shot by mario testino, jourdan dunn + sacha m’baye appear for a this campaign cameo for burberry prorsum’s spring collection. during the FW11 menswear show season, i had inquired about the male model seen for runway look no. 16 at the dolce show & look at who pops up in the burberry SS11 campaign- yes, sacha. as i had made a conscious decision to  opt out of posting the previously released burberry campaign images, i am very put off by the segregation that is seen in the campaign. as if black & white models couldn’t be photographed together the campaign showcases a release of separate sets this season. i am not clear what message they are looking to broadcast. as two of my favorite model faces in fashion, im very excited for the spot no less. represented by women model management, jourdan dunn has remained a strong force in her return to the runway last year & the new year looks like the same powerful force; represented by select london, sacha’s star is rapidly rising.

in a powerhouse cast of just about every bad bitch in the game, american vogue flexes it’s model casting muscle for the february 2011 issue while highlighting new york based designers. through the impeccable styling vision of grace coddington, mario testino shoots a perfected set of images that represent the essence of vogue. in honor of my female model friday concept, i felt it very necessary to save this spread for posting & present it to those who have not seen it, today. each model is perfectly matched to each design collection & im blown away by how powerful the cast is. it looks like vogue is swinging into the new year, full force. with hair & make-up byorlando pita & linda cantello the spread, the cast alone- speaks for itself.

the gap resurrects american retail

reinventing themselves on the retail front, patrick robinson presented this spring collection for american based retailer, the gap. for those unaware, the gap was founded in 1969 in san francisco, california. as a leading retailer since that time, the gap has changed the game with their own denim collection & their commitment to clean & casual california style. in 2009, gap inc. reached revenue of $14.2 billion & their online profits climbed due to their digital expansion in 55 different countries, which resulted in a 15% increase. while mixed emotion has been publicized by the media, the SF based retailer has struggled to rebrand itself; even going so far as changing their iconic logo & then turning around to revert back to the original due to a bad reaction from the public. that said, a resurgence of hope for the brand & a completely accurate vision of fashion’s modern era is upon us. brand creative director, patrick robinson, recently presented the brand’s spring 2011 men & womenswear collection with a refreshing sense of design. streamlined, clean, classic & minimal are words i’ve used of more progressive designer labels like céline, stella mccartney & even of iconic american fashion house, calvin klein. through fashion’s redirection of over the top glamour, a new minimalism is seeping through & slowly dominating the world of fashion. be that as it may, the gap fits right into that evolutionary mold perfectly, as clearly seen in the brands latest collection. in speaking of the collection, verbalizing the brands renewed direction, robinson expresses his disdain for heritage & comes across almost resenting the old casual friday reputation the gap has become known for. robinson says, “heritage doesn’t turn me on; it’s about america today” – which is an accurate verbalization of the collection itself. i am completely impressed by the refined design quality of both the menswear & womenswear from the set. while a sense of revitalization is felt, the brands defining qualities are mindfully in tact- a stunning set of american style. the design redirection of the gap is poised for greatness, not only here in america, but in europe as well. the gap has reportedly teamed with valentino to present a collection of “iconic gap basics,” in honor of the labels expansion into milan with a flagship at milan’s corso vittorio emanuele. while the collection is exclusive to milan, london & collete in paris, the collection will also become available at the gap’s rome location, which is currently under construction.

spring prêt-à-porter: sonia rykiel, paris

known in fashion for embodying the spirit of fun & fancy-free design, the spring sonia rykiel collection achieves it’s goal this season. a rich palette dipped in red, brown & yellow- the collection uses stripes, color blocked designs & smiles to win us over for yet another season. with karlie kloss opening, lindsey wixson, jacquelyn jablonski, vlada roslyakova, liu wen, siri tollerod, jourdan dunn, frida gustavsson & jac jagaciak followed during the runway show. use of sheer as well as spots of metallic ornamentation were added elements for an extra kick in the set & i really liked the development of the collections accessories. great attention to shape & cut was seen this season & rykiel seems to have hit her mark for another stretch.
