editorialesque » liu wen for vogue china

a staple in terms of model casting for vogue china, there hasn’t been an issue without liu wen of marilyn model managment for a significant amount of time. here, wen appears editorially through the lens of lachlan bailey. with an urban edge, liu is photographed in motion wearing some of fall’s greatest fall pieces. from the sleek pony tail to the metallic make-up- the urban theme is executed well while pieces from a wide range of collections are presented. while i like liu & admire the direction taken for this editorial; i wish the spread was taken to the next level. the use of natural lighting, likely enhanced with reflectors & such, plays well against stoned stairs & is greatly complimented by architecture. these aspects could’ve been much more focused on & mirrored through the clothes. the sportmax pieces that were pulled, seen in black, have the most stylistic relativity when considering the set location but much of what is seen treads the line of boring. liu has the model potential, we’ve seen it before- as have we with the photographic work of lachlan bailey. though i like the spread, there is a difference between that & love.

editorialesque » tao oakmoto, fei fei sun, shu pei + liu wen for v

for the pages of V magazine’s first ever asian issue, top asian female models tao okamoto, fei fei sun, shu pei & liu wen all appear through the lens of terry tsiolis for this girls on top editorial. poised for career longevity of true supermodels, each girl has had noted success on the runway, through editorial & on the campaign circuit. represented by ford, tao okamoto has been a forerunner as an asian female model, being of japanese decent & having booked every runway show from chanel to yigal azrouël. in the game since ’06, tao is a regular in american vogue & has booked campaigns with the gap, ralph lauren, kenzo, kenneth cole, zac posen & uniqlo throughout her career. fei fei sun is still considerably new to model but has made a large impact on the model front, appearing for british vogue, vogue japan, vogue china, vogue korea, elle china, marie claire china & american vogue; rapidly building a presence on the editorial circuit. represented by women model management & modeling since 2008, fei fei already ranks as fashion’s no. 31 female model within the top 50.  represented by next models ny, shu pei hit the scene & hard when she began modeling in 2007. debuting on the runways of new york fashion week for rachel roy & malandrino, fei fei modeled alongside tao for the gap FW10 campaign & has also earned a cosmetic contract with maybelline while securing campaign bookings for espirit & vera wang. quite possibly the biggest & brightest asian female model star of the moment is liu wen. represented by marilyn management, liu wen began modeling in her native of china in 2005 & rapidly rose to fame working with a number of chinese based fashion & beauty publications, only to become signed by the marilyn agency in their paris division. on the runway, liu was quickly closing shows in milan while walking for burberry & soon the campaigns came crashing in. campaigns with calvin klein, DKNY & historically, her contract with estée lauder soon followed as liu became the first asian victoria’s secret angel to appear on the runway- all while securing regular editorial appearances in french vogue, british vogue, vogue china & american vogue. dubbed the girls on top, their stats & bookings leave no room for criticism or argument. i love the images & think each of these girls has more than secured a future in fashion modeling. appearing together for the historical givenchy haute couture collection january of this year, it seems as though the fashion industry is finally allowing diversity to be represented much more freely. styled by jay massacret, with hair & make-up by esther langham & yadim, these girls should be, without a doubt on your radar. this marks a new ear in modeling.

memoirs of a gaga: the v magazine cover series

through the lens of inez + vinoodh, lady gaga appears for the highly anticipated asian issue of V magazine. a total of four covers will be released & each cover sees gaga, styled by nicola formichetti, outfitted in mugler. known for her over the top approach to style, gaga has changed our peception of musical artistry & challenged our views of beauty while creating a clearer path of relativity between both music & fashion. while i love the covers & admire the styling direction taken- i don’t quite understand how lady gaga fits into the definition of “asian” for the asian issue of V magazine. granted the explosive presence of asian models in fashion this year; wouldn’t it have been more suitable for them to devote an all-asian model cast for the cover series? with models liu wen, shu pei, tao okamoto & fei fei sun slaying the high fashion scene, an asian female model cover series would’ve been more than possible. granted the popularity of gaga, im leaning more towards the fact that she can sell a cover faster, to the masses, than a couple of chicks us fashion kids are screaming for every month in the glossies. with contents that focus on asian models on the inside, beyond gaga, there is much more of this issue that is far more interesting & historical. a year in the making, this is not an issue you want to miss. purchase the hard-bound collectors edition here.

editorialesque » liu wen for vogue china

through the lens of mark segal, vogue china favorite, liu wen appears for the may issue of chinese vogue. keeping it chic with western styling & cowgirl styling, liu appears flawlessly. what i love about the spread is the opportunity taken to showcase liu’s versatility through another angle of design. while i don’t particularly favor western themed, well, anything- i do value model versatility above all. liu can also be seen in the spring campaigns for the gap, estée lauder & cK by calvin klein. represented marilyn model management, liu wen is one of china’s biggest & baddest female models of the current time.

editorialesque » liu wen for vogue china

represented by marilyn model management, liu wen appears once more for the pages of vogue china. shot for the april issue by hans feurer & styled by anne christensen, it seems as though spring will be as overwhelmed with a single color, much like the fall was draped in black. as a leading chinese female of the current asian invasion in fashion, liu wen appears regularly for the pages of vogue china & is, for the most part, expected to appear in every issue, if not every cover. though i admire liu & applaud her historical, groundbreaking career path that is blazing trails for many others to follow, i will say that her constant appearances are becoming a bit redundant. ranking as fashion’s no. 10 female model, other asian females are waiting in the wings as liu opens the doors. the spread see here channels more of a 90’s inspiration, i feel. liu trades in her long black locks for a crisp bob & appears beachside in some of springs hottest whites. casual styling, fitting for the spring.

fall collections, new york: y-3

created in black & white, with red accents, the Y-3 fall collection taps into progressive concepts & forward fashion elements along with a stunning cast. fei fei sun opened the show as jac jagaciak, hanne gaby odiele, jacob coupe, mark cox, ajak deng, frida gustavsson, constance jablonski, mathias lauridsen, liu wen, tao okamoto, lasse pedersen, clement chabenaud & armando cabral followed in the 60 look collection. the Y-3 collection is yohji yamamoto’s modernized approach to design with a usually dark aesthetic. this season, in a sea of black, elements of white & khaki were seen but for the most part, the collection remained dimmed through palette. plaid was seen in the collection as well along with few shots of grey & blue. overall, the collection is one of great direction & solid execution. nothing too spectacular, but it’s an overall fare presentation.

fall collections, new york: altuzarra

urban refinement is how i would describe the FW11 collection presented by joseph altuzarra. luxurious use of fur was seen on the collections coats as models walked the runway in sheer tops, larger than life parkas, argyle & satin gowns. interesting design was seen in the collections dresses, it was chaotic but still sexy- very interesting. a wide range of basic colors was used for the collection palette as shades of grey, brown, red, white, neutral & black were seen with a bit of gold undertones. equipped with a red statement lip & catlined eye daphne groenveld opened the show as karolina kurkova, karmen pedaru, arizona muse, joan smalls, toni garrn, jacquelyn jablonski, jourdan dunn, frida gustavsson, karlie kloss, magdalena frackowiak, hanne gaby odiele, fei fei sun, jac jagaciak, ashley smith, constance jablonski, liu wen, sigrid agren walked leading to kasia struss, who closed the show. a beautiful collection of daring design that allowed sophisticated pieces to become urbanized through styling.
