shot by karim sadli, i-D magazine takes a focused look on the casting of daniel peddle & drew dasent for the legendary house of givenchy. the casting phenomenon & influential power of the house of givenchy are something straight out of a dream for most models- spotlighting the phenomenal cast is more than necessary. booking a givenchy show can lead to a number of other fashion opportunities for male & female models alike. booking givenchy allows models to transcend onto the next level. ethnically diverse, not many can surpasss or even equal to the power & creative force of riccardo tisci, the creative director of givenchy- he sets the trends for what the rest of the high fashion realm follow. what’s most admirable about the casting of givenchy is the attraction to new & unknown models, it’s that fearlessness to break new ground that allows all elements of fashion, style & modeling to transform into something unseen, something original & artistically inspired. it goes without saying that givenchy has one of the best male & female models casts every season; on the runway & also through campaigns.

menswear collections: givenchy, fall

the house of givenchy continues to establish & expand their current design signatures with a cast of usual suspects for the runways of men’s paris fashion week. flames, florals, black & brown with bleached brows & hair- the collection is one of great concept & expectedly strong direction. while a few womenswear looks did appear for the mens show, we seen two blacked out looks- one of which was worn by supermodel, joan smalls. as for the boys; taejahn taylor joined the givenchy roster along with veterans rob evans, paolo roldan, manuel ramos, kadeem, eduardo calero, dominique hollington, keith hernandez jon marquez & stephen thompson, who is the albino male model, represented by major models, whom appeared for the labels spring campaign. before the runway show had a chance to begin, technical difficulties resulted in a momentary black out & it seems as though the lack of light was magically translated through the clothes. though deep earth tones, navy & some neutrals are used, the collection remained, for the most part, dark; an aesthetic creative director ricardo tisci favors greatly. i love the multi-layered coats as well as the use of plaid, fur & images of barking canine’s on some of the collections pieces. one of the strongest houses right now, not only in paris but internationally is, givenchy. with an increasingly larger cast that is seen on the runway & for campaigns, i am beyond excited & thrilled to see what will be presented for haute couture as well as women’s ready-to-wear, which is also not too far off. of the givenchy collections, i expect greatness & each season, im thoroughly satisfied.

editorialesque » ciara for french vogue

shot by mert + marcus, ciara is the current muse of ricardo tisci, creative director of givenchy. appearing for the july issue of french vogue, ciara takes it to the next level fusing urban music with high fashion as she appears alongside manuel ramos of request models & simon nessman of major. the images are completely chic & im thoroughly impressed with how relative the entire presentation is to the givenchy brand. a standing ovation to ciara for all her progress in both music & her entrance into the high fashion universe. dark, glamourous & completely seductive, this is the stuff of R&B chicks dreams.

editorialesque » controversy with daria werbowy for interview

what yo’ name iz? oraine barrett, daria werbowy, raschelle osbourne, sebene blake,
david agbodji, salieu jalloh, armando cabral, adesuwa aigheni, carmelita mendes,
manuel ramos, kelly moreira, rafton glean, peter giang, dorian cobb,
lisalla montenegro, pablo contreras, ajak deng

shot by mikael jan, supermodel daria werbowy appears for the may issue of interview magazine, surrounded black models. while excited about the beauty of the images & the showcase in which models of color were given initially, i still sit here with a sense of discomfort. a large reason for the creation of this blog was not only to have a dialogue about fashion but to document the changes & evolution of how beauty is projected from the runway to glossed publications. while its no secret, a large intent of what is covered is aimed at showcasing models of color. in the time it takes me to gather content specifically aimed toward what i am able to respond to, color still has a very bleek existence. from campaign debuts to who opened the runway show; while color has begun to trickle into fashion in the forefront, i still struggle with the idea that it is being embraced with permanence. case in point the spread seen here; we see some of my favorites salieu jalloh, dorian cobb, david agbodji, manuel ramos, oraine barrett & a slew of new black faces. my issue is not with the image quality, i dont have any negative marks with styling nor the lighting. rather, i have an issue with the cast & the one standout of the bunch. daria werbowy appears to be the only female of non-black descent; making it seem like each of the black models are props. just as we see the bar, the cars & records on the wall- its as if each model is used as a filler to highlight daria. why not remove her & make it entirely black? while i can fully appreciate contrast, i feel like there are some harsh undertones here. i feel like this makes it feel as though black & being black is ‘of the moment’ when in fact, for many, present company included- color & being of color is very much a permanent state. the images are amazing, but the decesion to cast in this way & how it is seen makes me take a closer look & when close, im not sure if i like what i see. beyond model identification, past what agency is representing who or which model chick is on top- the goal here is to identify beauty, question direction & challenge perception.
