NEW YORK – in an effort to release myself from the feeling of entrapment amidst all of this high fashion bullshit; the nature of collection reviews will be going slightly different. only dedicating myself to shit i absolutely love, the 2012 pre-fall collection presented by jason wu fall under that category. after underwhelming collections by elie tahari, DKNY, chanel, oscar de la renta, carolina herrera & michael kors- the jason wu collection struck me dead. while some collections have had outstanding looks, overall, as a collection the jason wu pre-fall set, thus far, takes the cake. inspired by illustrator, charley harper & the maharaja, the collection takes on a beautiful fall palette. most outstanding was the use of green within this collection’s palette. wide ranged, stylistically, the collection takes everything associated with fall & adds wu’s magical design touch in a perfect way. jewel tones were given added depth in the collection as the set closed with a dramatic grouping of gowns. the collection could not have been more beautiful; clean lines, beautiful jackets, super sick use of fur & well tailored pant looks. strong execution, expert style brought to life. considering how young of a design wu is, his approach to high fashion & fine design has beautifully evolved in front of our very eyes. probably one of my favorite designers in the american market. standing ovation to this collection, im on my feet. collection images: versace, resort

with announcement of a collaboration with H&M, it seems as though the versace label has no plans to slow down anytime soon. based in italy, the versace label is set to see a new era unfold in front of our very eyes. in death, gianni versace historically gave his sister donatella versace’s daughter, allegra versace a 50% stake in the company. allegra alone holds the largest stake & has for quite sometime since her childhood. allegra has spoken, regarding her work with the label, saying that she has now become more greatly involved & is in the midst helping with creative elements with collections & other aspects of the luxury brand. for the 2012 pre-season resort season, the versace casts daphne groeneveld while producing fun florals, bold colors & that signature feel of versace glamour that we’ve all come to expect, enjoy & admire. overall, the collection is a fitting piece to the versace puzzle & a consistent move toward creating a sharper vision of the new era in which donatella has crafted following the departure of her brother. exciting things are definitely on the rise for the house of versace.

collection images: emilio pucci, resort

lively & animalistic, the 2012 resort collection by emilio pucci represents all of the visual signatures i associate with the label. surprisingly wide ranged, the collection provides options for pre-season dress in pant looks, blazers, gowns & bathing suits. overall, the resort season is intended for vacation attire & the pucci label thrives in this aesthetic theme, even when not in the pre-season. overall, the collection is strong but i expect something of this capacity from a label like pucci, especially considering how beautifully every collection has been for the pucci label in the last four seasons. strong set of design.

collection images: bally, resort

with their swiss heritage looking to be refocused upon in the event of switching creative directors, the bally label presents their 2012 resort collection with a basis of clean, sophisticated style. while most of the collection is made up of leather, the collection seemingly draws more focus upon it’s accessories component. though nothing groundbreaking is seen, the collection remains incredibly modern. a bit bland in terms of palette, the collection borders boring in their simplification & void of design details. clean & classical style with modern influence.

collection images: giambattista valli, resort

alive with color & modern in cut, the 2012 resort collection presented by giambattista valli hits the vein of italian fashion for the pre-season. overall, the collection is suitable for vacation wear, while gowns are seen adding a facet of versatility while still representing the formal signatures of design, which i often associate with the valli label. in this collection, i see a bit of vintage influence- considering that a number of the dresses seen are in a baby doll cut. i was hoping for something a bit more sophisticated but can still appreciate the opposition of what was produced for the off-season. solid overall.

collection images: altuzarra, resort

following a collection filled with python skin dresses, i was suprisingly attracted to the fact that joseph altuzarra opted for something much more minimal & tame. while the minimalist approach to fashion design has become the new wave of style; there is a certain air of power in such dramatized forms of simplicity. i loved the collections coats & love the purified direction that has been represented this pre-season. complimented by candy colored walls, i love that different labels are taking a more stylized approach to their collection images- altuzarra’s approach really representing a fresh take on womenswear in that respect. equipped with lengthened design lines & structured elements of femininity- the collection serves it’s purpose, cleanly.

collection images: preen, resort

elusively modern, the preen 2012 resort collection dabbles into current trends with their use of yellow as the labels signature of print is well represented; in an effort to represent continuity from what we’ve seen on the runway. complimented by natural lighting in the collection set of images, the preen label was created by justin thornton & thea bregazzin in 1996. while still a developing label in the midst of fashion’s digital globalization; the collections of the preen label have been described as ‘cool sophistication’ & nothing rings more true to that descriptive than this collection. beautiful attention to silhouette, mindful use of color & sharp execution throughout. a wide range of looks with beautiful details & minimalist design accents.
