shot by karim sadli, i-D magazine takes a focused look on the casting of daniel peddle & drew dasent for the legendary house of givenchy. the casting phenomenon & influential power of the house of givenchy are something straight out of a dream for most models- spotlighting the phenomenal cast is more than necessary. booking a givenchy show can lead to a number of other fashion opportunities for male & female models alike. booking givenchy allows models to transcend onto the next level. ethnically diverse, not many can surpasss or even equal to the power & creative force of riccardo tisci, the creative director of givenchy- he sets the trends for what the rest of the high fashion realm follow. what’s most admirable about the casting of givenchy is the attraction to new & unknown models, it’s that fearlessness to break new ground that allows all elements of fashion, style & modeling to transform into something unseen, something original & artistically inspired. it goes without saying that givenchy has one of the best male & female models casts every season; on the runway & also through campaigns.

represented by major models, rob evans appears editorially for the debut issue of johnson magazine. photographed by christian oita, evans appears flawless while his boxing physique steals the show. styled by matthew josephs, rob evans represents a shift in male modeling & drives the nail of masculine resurgence even further into the coffin. suggestive cropping & artistic lighting prove to be a successful combination as rob continues to create a larger presence in the realm of male modeling. already a sensation in the industry, though rob does not yet rank within fashion’s top 50 male models; he has rapidly gained momentum, appearing in the new CK calvin klein campaign alongside singer cassie & supermodel icon lara stone. in addition, rob has been booking editorial left & right appearing for three spring publications for 2011.

throughout much of my life, my world has revolved around publication. when i was younger, my little brother & little sister were asking for candy bars at the register while at the grocery store & i was asking my mom to buy me vogue. my love for female models came first- as fashion is & always will be dominated by women. throughout the 90’s supermodels dominated the world & as a move of opposition; the fashion industry started to seek something different. in opposition, kate moss was discovered. of course, after some time kate herself transformed from heroine chic poster child to full blown supermodel & even walked this past week for louis vuitton alongside fellow runway legend, naomi campbell. throughout the 2000’s celebrity covers took center stage & ultimately gave way to the demise of the supermodel, allowing a-list actresses to fill their spot, unstoppably, with the approval of publication heavyweights like anna wintour. while american publications have led this movement for many years now, it seems as though a shift is on the rise. other european & international publications still opt for the classic cover formula of a female models, while mixing in a bit of celebrity cameos every once & a great while. while 2009 brought a resurgence of supermodels back into the limelight; we, as the public, are still starving for our next great supermodel icon. with the rise of models like coco rocha, daria werbowy, lara stone & joan smalls- things seem to be looking up for us fashion kids hoping to see joan on the cover of vogue as oppose to angelina jolie. while female domination continues to lock the game down entirely, an interesting rise has also begun to happen within male modeling. as kate moss ushered in a new era of waif models, both male & female, this standard has now been shattered. lara stone, fashion’s top model in the game, has single handedly changed the women’s sector of modeling with her curves & cleavage; making goals of agencies & bookers different than in the 80’s & 90’s- boobs are back. for male models, classic masculine & herb ritts-esque builds are returning to the forefront & details magazine makes an interesting cover model choice to represent this shift. shot by carter smith, noah mills of wilhelmina teams with arthur kulkov of request models & sean o’pry of VNY, for what proves to be a landmark move for a commercial publication like details. with styling by mel ottenberg & casting by edward kim, i hope to see a forming pattern for these types of casts. you’ve seen noah mills in sex & the city 2, as a love interest of samantha jones & he is also a favored male of dolce & gabbana. sean o’pry was discovered by nolé marin on myspace & received the golden key for kennesaw, georgia after being recognized for his work with brands like zara, saks, calvin klein, uniqlo, DKNY & the gap. as for arthur kulkov, he ranks as the no. 19 highest earning male in fashion, having landed campaigns for banana republic, espirit, j.crew as well as dolce & gabbana. of the three seen here, only a portion of talent is represented & many more classically handsome male models have also helped revitalize this resurgence of masculinity. male models david gandy, chad white, rob evans, jon kortajarena & david agbodji continue to further allow the world of male modeling to transform & morph into a realm of greater possibilities. these dudes got next.

rob evans, pablo otero & stephen thompson have been seen on the runway & in the campaign for the house of givenchy & have become staples for the major models men’s board. major models has changed drastically since last year after a shift in represented males happened late last year. that said, the men of major pack a powerful punch thanks to the developed relations the agency has with both high end & commercial clients. in addition to the more outstanding faces of the major men’s board, i look forward to see which shows jerry chiang & marcell harris will be booking. while much has to be proved with this new board; as seen in the past, i expect great things from what has been left of major models. one aspect i associate with major models is that of masculinity; i am waiting to see which direction is taken with this new crop of model talents though, being that the expected DNA of the agency is seen on the men’s board of soul artists management. i wish all the guys luck on the runway.

the house of givenchy continues to establish & expand their current design signatures with a cast of usual suspects for the runways of men’s paris fashion week. flames, florals, black & brown with bleached brows & hair- the collection is one of great concept & expectedly strong direction. while a few womenswear looks did appear for the mens show, we seen two blacked out looks- one of which was worn by supermodel, joan smalls. as for the boys; taejahn taylor joined the givenchy roster along with veterans rob evans, paolo roldan, manuel ramos, kadeem, eduardo calero, dominique hollington, keith hernandez jon marquez & stephen thompson, who is the albino male model, represented by major models, whom appeared for the labels spring campaign. before the runway show had a chance to begin, technical difficulties resulted in a momentary black out & it seems as though the lack of light was magically translated through the clothes. though deep earth tones, navy & some neutrals are used, the collection remained, for the most part, dark; an aesthetic creative director ricardo tisci favors greatly. i love the multi-layered coats as well as the use of plaid, fur & images of barking canine’s on some of the collections pieces. one of the strongest houses right now, not only in paris but internationally is, givenchy. with an increasingly larger cast that is seen on the runway & for campaigns, i am beyond excited & thrilled to see what will be presented for haute couture as well as women’s ready-to-wear, which is also not too far off. of the givenchy collections, i expect greatness & each season, im thoroughly satisfied.

celebrating 100 years in fashion, the trussardi menswear collection presented via live feed today was one of great style & expert execution. creatively directed by fashion heavyweight, milan vukmirovic; the trussardi 1911 FW11 collection capitalized on leather, leather & yes, more leather. progressive with mindful classic elements, the collection allows masculinity to shine while style is not sacrificed. with rob evans of major opening the menswear show, clément chabernaud of wilhelmina closed while a walk & wave by vukmirovic lead the show to a black fade out. surprising, is the fact that a runway show & live stream were opted for as last season’s collection was shown through image look book with no runway. that said, the collections combination of dark details, raw style edge & clean tailoring shows that the label is entering a new era with a renewed sense of verver. a beautifully executed collection of menswear with a stunning cast of male models. milan vukmirovic is impossibly ill.
