a leader in fashion regality, vera wang’s summer/spring campaign is almost as stunning as the spring collection. from vera’s ready-to-wear to her A-list bridal wear, her entire fashion catalog for the spring was shot in this beautiful, majestic campaign starring asian female model, shu pei. as an asian fashion designer, i love that vera cast asian models this season, as this definitely drives the presence of ethnic models in the luxury market. for the past year, asia has had an increased amount of press considering the heightened demands in their luxury market. as a strong point for asia, the throngs of asian designers looking to enter the asian market are bossing up in their appeal for the consumer market in surprising ways.

for the spring season of ready-to-wear collection, wang pulled inspiration from eighteenth century wallpaper. a move which seen her ready-to-wear collection sprawling with beautiful details & combined with waves of tulle, a design signature of her famed bridal collection. from the collections, despite them being on separate divides of fashion; the campaign is a culmination of wang’s exquisite taste. what i love most about vera is her ability to combine sophistication with trend that would be well received by a younger demographic. even in her well versed skills of appealing to a younger consumer base, it never feels as though she isolating the more upscale demographic, or the more mature. overall, the collection is angelic & delicate, much like the collection. the choice to shoot in doors, against larger windows- as you can see the outside elements; provides that feel of spring. beautifully executed & thoughtful campaign. fall collections, new york: vera wang

the vera wang FW11 collection surprised me in it’s show of rugged & still soft feminine influence. in season’s past, i had criticized what was presented on the runway as being unpolished & unattractive; but this season a defined form of urban elegance is felt. with a dark, moody eye & slightly undone hair fur lined parkas were matched to ethereal gowns & ankle boots that allowed vera’s elegant style signature to clash with the edge of new york city street fashion. i was very inspired by how rugged & perfected each look was- very, very happy with what was created this year, in style & design. all our faves walked for the show as daphne gorenveld opened leading joan smalls, ming xi, kasia struss, hanne gaby odiele, sigrid agren, jac & frida gustavsson, among others, down the runway. arizona muse closed the show in a vintage inspired sleeved gown which allowed the soft feel i described to be felt through to the end. cohesive from the first look to the last; it’s glamourous, edgy, sophisticated & extremely stylish- i love this collection & applaud the vera wang label. here two perceptions of style collide, perfectly.

fall shwpckg: wilhelmina models, new york

founded in 1967 by wilhelmina & bruce cooper, wilhelmina models has agency offices in new york, los angeles, miami & munich. presenting an intimate set of females for the FW11 show season in new york. among this set of faces, the most outstanding is that of melodie monrose. hailing from martinique, monrose has had strong bookings on the runway, appearing for marc jacobs, gucci, miu miu, YSL & lanvin in season’s past. editorial bookings seen at the back end of 2010 allowed monrose to garner even more leverage as a promising new face as she appeared for the pages of interview, dazed & confused & V magazine. that said, with the increase of demand for asian female models, i can sense success this season for wang xiao. keke lindgard hails from hawaii & has had noted success in editorial bookings & even booked the SS11 D&G campaign. though small, an agency with smaller board is able to give specialized attention to each girl, which could weigh more valuable than big powerhouse agencies. furthermore, you never know what could happen on the runway. remember these girls.

shu pei for vera wang, spring

represented by next models ny, chinese female model, shu pei, is the face of vera wang for the summer/spring 2011 season. seen here are images that were shot in promotion of the ready-to-wear collection, eyewear collection & bridal collections designed by vera wang. the images are fitting for the label & i love that vera wang, as a chinese/american womenswear designer, has opted to go with a chinese model. as popularly discussed in both writing & verbally during my weekly fashion report segment; the rising demand for luxury in asia is directly influencing the world of fashion. from oriental inspired collections for the house of louis vuitton, to the casting of more asian female models- it’s really a special time for ethnic models & designers alike. beautifully shot by carter smith, styling for the campaign was done by lori goldstein. a fitting campaign for the wang label.

fall collections, new york: vera wang

after the disappointment i had expressed in seeing the pre-fall collection for vera wang; i was surprisingly impressed by what was actually shown on the runway. situated comfortably in the blackout of fashion trend, the collection fused sophistication with minimal elements of edge. satin & bits of fur were used in the collection, enough for you to recognize that this is a vera wang collection. the style signatures of wang as a designer were very well showcased & im satisfied with what was shown. whats dope about the vera wang collections they are very age conscious; in that, women in their 20’s can rock it as well as women in their 40’s. wang is talent amongst fashion elite, a solid showing for her this fall.

pre-fall collections: vera wang

the vera wang pre-fall collection hosts black & grey with hints of sequin & sheer material. though i admire the bridal collections of vera wang, i find that this pre-fall collection reveals a dated design aesthetic. the pieces, collectively, look a bit sloppy to me. though the looks may have been intended to look that way, i dont find them chic at all. the construction seems very amateur & there is no cohesion represented in the choice of textured fabrics. though i do favor some of the black pieces, i find that black easily hides poor design details. wang brings years of experience to her fashion collections; once being the senior fashion editor for sixteen years at american vogue. she even turned down the position as editor in chief (anna wintour’s job) to work as a design director at ralph lauren. she has designed wedding gowns for mariah carey, jennifer lopez & ivanka trump- surely this would mean that she understands some form of elegance & sophistication. those elements, however, are not represented in the pre-fall collection we see presented here. these designs, i feel, are a misrepresentation of the class that is, vera wang.
