russian harper’s bazaar celebrates fifteen years with fifteen covers

celebrating 15 years in print, harper’s bazaar russia releases 15 commemorative covers. covers by karl lagerfeld, ralph lauren, moschino, viktor & rolf, diane von furstenburg, dolce & gabbana, antonio marras, armani, cavalli, sonia rykiel, jean paul gaultier, missoni, michael kors, versace & pucci are all seen in this post, as each allow their own individualized signatures to shine through. 15 years in the game is significant & i love that harper’s bazaar is always pushing the envelope as far as covers are concerned. they really capitalized, internationally, when they created special subscriber’s edition covers & separate newsstand editions. while creating subscription incentive, they double their mark of creativity by selecting two dope images rather than the standard of one. while many believe that fashion publications are slowly being phased out; i always say that nothing compares to see incredible images on high gloss paper. here’s to harper’s bazaar russia for many more years to come.

fall prêt-à-porter, paris: viktor + rolf

red faced, villan-esque & highly stylized- the viktor & rolf FW11 collection presented in paris never once laced imagination or innovation with it’s approach to the fall. while the models resembled darth maul from star wars: episode one (s/o to camille harvey for character identification) the collection was over the top & broke the mold, opposing greater forms of minimalism, which have been popular amongst the most powerful houses. while last season was much more tame, it seems as though viktor & rolf have mastered the art of suprise, creating & presenting inspiring concepts from season to season, with appropriate pauses in between. overall, the clothes do blur the lines of wearable pieces & style of photographic shock- the direction taken this season is well delivered, thoughtfully executed & all in all, well done. dramatic collars, sleek silhouette & a controlled palette allow the vision of the collection to be much more powerfully felt. construction was the headlining element of the set, as intricate development of looks, shape & volume were seen from beginning to end. viktor & rolf continually raise the bar & im very excited to see how editors & stylists work these pieces into fashion publication for the fall season of 2011.

menswear collections: viktor & rolf, fall

noticeably more restrained, the FW11 menswear collection presented by viktor & rolf in paris is a clear indication of the widely popular simplification of fashion design. in the last few seasons viktor & rolf have become more known for over the top, avant-garde designs that stretch our own creative comprehension. here, though simple, im very impressed by the strength of the direction that is felt in this collection. with a controlled palette of black, white, grey & khaki- the collection showcases color contrast with one red look for the season; a thoughtful touch & very interesting addition. beautiful wool suits & stunning combinations of khaki & black allow the collection to be appreciated, by myself, considering my own personal style is that of a more minimal aesthetic. a strong direction & impressive set of sharply executed menswear looks that allow true style to be seen without any design gimmicks or distractions. i am very impressed with this set of design.

spring prêt-à-porter: viktor + rolf, paris

blue, black, white & red were the headlining tones used in the spring palette of viktor & rolf in paris for SS11. admittedly, i had expected something out of this world in design from this collection following last season’s tull explosion, but the collection took it down a notch & returned with a promising set focused on thoughtful & well developed design. with metallics dominating the trend forecast of spring 2011, the collection uses those elements & streamlines them throughout the entire collection. always imaginative, viktor & rolf allowed each design to shine on the runway as kasia struss opened, following abbey lee kershaw, constance jablonski, sigrid agren, lindsey wixson, joan smalls, jacquelyn jablonski, jourdan dunn, jac jagaciak & karlie kloss. the collection seems to take on more masculine elements of design & exaggerate them in volume & cut. my favorite element of the collection was the use of white. while some designers seemed to underwhelm in a powerful use of white in new york, the V&R label took it to another level, with the use of sheer , satin & a well developed concept which seemed to magnify the classic white shirt. almost as a runway show of living animation, the design that stood out the most was the collections opening & closing piece- which was designed as a combination of multiple shirts with exposed cuffs as shoulders- a completely groundbreaking concept. always a collection i look forward to- very pleased this season. thoughtful & beautiful.

fall prêt-à-porter, paris: viktor + rolf

presenting complete innovation, one step ahead with construction, the viktor & rolf FW10 collection was nothing short of amazing. concepts were reinvented with intriguing textile selections & new fashion silouettes were seen. i am continually impressed with viktor & rolf’s ability to transcend what has already been seen in fashion. they consistently border & blur the lines between couture, avant-garde design & ready-to-wear commercial acceptance. a completely astounding showing this season; i could sit here & discuss the amazement of the garment construction but that would only take too much time away from you, & that time should be spent looking at the clothes. you cannot look at this collection & tell me that you are not impressed by the powers of the human imagination. this collection is proof that fashion is a valued art form. jaw dropping innovation & devastating dopeness; this is such a vital source of inspiration for me. black & white, chic as fuck, imagination intertwined with the impossible. this collection takes me to another place. im stunned in amazement; this is what high end runway presentation is all about.
