through the lens of dusan reljin, marlon teixeira appears for the SS11 issue of GQ style china. styled by sean spellman, the denim doused editorial spread showcases on teixeira is raw form- masculinity enhanced. as a lover of black & white photography, i love the aged feel that this spread gives off & i love how well that fits alongside the denim pieces that were selected. high end editorial is all about focusing elements of photography & correctly aligning those elements with style quality- both of which are greatly represented here. represented by wilhelmina models, marlon is of brazilian ethnicity & is a stand out in this new age of male modeling. physically, marlon’s facial features tap into the model market of ‘boyish features’ while his body is an ode to classic masculinity- a perfect combination it seems. marlon’s been seen everywhere from campaign’s with armani to the cover of vanity teen- versatility is one skill he has possessed since he began modeling in 2008.

as kris van assche continues to revitalize what it means to be the dior man, a resurgence of 90’s style is seen clearly defined by the current dior homme collection. shot by greg gex, styled by matthieu pabiot, alexander johansson of new york models appears alongside tomek szuczkiecki of wilhelmina for this metal magazine advertorial. ruled by clean lines & sleek design, i love both the designs of kris van assche’s name sake label & greatly admire his mission with dior homme. noticeably more modernized & a creative stand alone, when considering brand consistency alongside dior’s womenswear label, KVA deconstructs the idea of great menswear & allows new ground to be broken. the editorial spread, with intense lighting & dramatic shadows is a fitting representation of this new modernized vision. while i do recognize some 90’s elements within the collection, i feel as though not enough references in design were created to base an entire advertorial spread on them.

zhao lei, represented by wilhelmina models, appears for the spring issue of vogue hommes japan through the lens of ben weller. with hair by tomo jida & styling by shun watanabe, the ‘smooth operator’ themed spread focuses on masculine beauty in the form of flawless skin. one aspect i heavily scrutinize when reviewing beauty shots is the quality of retouching; it’s no secret that high fashion editorial is retouched among many other things that we, as the public, are attracted to. whether you’re zooming in to see pores or if you’re trying to decifer whether or not the make-up ends here & begins there- one things for sure, the concept of men’s beauty will never be as vastly explored as it has been for women. i admire the seen here & applaud the opportunity taken to create a male’s perspective on beauty. good set of images, bold backdrops & yes photoshop.

the rise of the male supermodel

throughout much of my life, my world has revolved around publication. when i was younger, my little brother & little sister were asking for candy bars at the register while at the grocery store & i was asking my mom to buy me vogue. my love for female models came first- as fashion is & always will be dominated by women. throughout the 90’s supermodels dominated the world & as a move of opposition; the fashion industry started to seek something different. in opposition, kate moss was discovered. of course, after some time kate herself transformed from heroine chic poster child to full blown supermodel & even walked this past week for louis vuitton alongside fellow runway legend, naomi campbell. throughout the 2000’s celebrity covers took center stage & ultimately gave way to the demise of the supermodel, allowing a-list actresses to fill their spot, unstoppably, with the approval of publication heavyweights like anna wintour. while american publications have led this movement for many years now, it seems as though a shift is on the rise. other european & international publications still opt for the classic cover formula of a female models, while mixing in a bit of celebrity cameos every once & a great while. while 2009 brought a resurgence of supermodels back into the limelight; we, as the public, are still starving for our next great supermodel icon. with the rise of models like coco rocha, daria werbowy, lara stone & joan smalls- things seem to be looking up for us fashion kids hoping to see joan on the cover of vogue as oppose to angelina jolie. while female domination continues to lock the game down entirely, an interesting rise has also begun to happen within male modeling. as kate moss ushered in a new era of waif models, both male & female, this standard has now been shattered. lara stone, fashion’s top model in the game, has single handedly changed the women’s sector of modeling with her curves & cleavage; making goals of agencies & bookers different than in the 80’s & 90’s- boobs are back. for male models, classic masculine & herb ritts-esque builds are returning to the forefront & details magazine makes an interesting cover model choice to represent this shift. shot by carter smith, noah mills of wilhelmina teams with arthur kulkov of request models & sean o’pry of VNY, for what proves to be a landmark move for a commercial publication like details. with styling by mel ottenberg & casting by edward kim, i hope to see a forming pattern for these types of casts. you’ve seen noah mills in sex & the city 2, as a love interest of samantha jones & he is also a favored male of dolce & gabbana. sean o’pry was discovered by nolé marin on myspace & received the golden key for kennesaw, georgia after being recognized for his work with brands like zara, saks, calvin klein, uniqlo, DKNY & the gap. as for arthur kulkov, he ranks as the no. 19 highest earning male in fashion, having landed campaigns for banana republic, espirit, j.crew as well as dolce & gabbana. of the three seen here, only a portion of talent is represented & many more classically handsome male models have also helped revitalize this resurgence of masculinity. male models david gandy, chad white, rob evans, jon kortajarena & david agbodji continue to further allow the world of male modeling to transform & morph into a realm of greater possibilities. these dudes got next.

fall shwpckg: wilhelmina models, new york

founded in 1967 by wilhelmina & bruce cooper, wilhelmina models has agency offices in new york, los angeles, miami & munich. presenting an intimate set of females for the FW11 show season in new york. among this set of faces, the most outstanding is that of melodie monrose. hailing from martinique, monrose has had strong bookings on the runway, appearing for marc jacobs, gucci, miu miu, YSL & lanvin in season’s past. editorial bookings seen at the back end of 2010 allowed monrose to garner even more leverage as a promising new face as she appeared for the pages of interview, dazed & confused & V magazine. that said, with the increase of demand for asian female models, i can sense success this season for wang xiao. keke lindgard hails from hawaii & has had noted success in editorial bookings & even booked the SS11 D&G campaign. though small, an agency with smaller board is able to give specialized attention to each girl, which could weigh more valuable than big powerhouse agencies. furthermore, you never know what could happen on the runway. remember these girls.

menswear collections: trussardi, fall

celebrating 100 years in fashion, the trussardi menswear collection presented via live feed today was one of great style & expert execution. creatively directed by fashion heavyweight, milan vukmirovic; the trussardi 1911 FW11 collection capitalized on leather, leather & yes, more leather. progressive with mindful classic elements, the collection allows masculinity to shine while style is not sacrificed. with rob evans of major opening the menswear show, clément chabernaud of wilhelmina closed while a walk & wave by vukmirovic lead the show to a black fade out. surprising, is the fact that a runway show & live stream were opted for as last season’s collection was shown through image look book with no runway. that said, the collections combination of dark details, raw style edge & clean tailoring shows that the label is entering a new era with a renewed sense of verver. a beautifully executed collection of menswear with a stunning cast of male models. milan vukmirovic is impossibly ill.
