collection images: vera wang, pre-fall

in the past, i’ve been dissapointed by the collections designed & presented for vera wang; for the pre-season, im reasonably satisfied. while it seems as though much of what i was least favorable of has been left out- wang’s style is very apparent & is seen clearly translated in many of her design ventures. while the opening sequence of the show introduced quintessential black pieces; we seen fur with pleated skirts & mini-capes- it was very refined downtown sophistication. shots of neutral & iced whites by way of satin gowns were seen. my most favorite element of the collection this pre-season was the footwear & the knee highs- not only versatile, but unendingly stylish. great use of color toward the close of the show sequence. i found interesting concepts in the way the garments were shaped as well; beautiful construction in the collections dresses. overall, great style was presented. vera wang fares well, looking forward to see what she will reveal for FW11 in new york.

collection images: nicole miller, pre-fall

i normally feel indifferent about the nicole miller label, admittedly i have not been the biggest fan. that said, i am very impressed by what was presented by the label for pre-fall 2011. strong design lines were presented in the form of jump suits, skirts & wide legged trousers. the collection presents an interesting exaggeration of silhouette & shape to the female form. after the introduction of black looks, the collection transcended into a collective of galactic prints that were beautifully concepturalized & executed. i am very, very pleased with what was presented & am now eagerly anticipating the labels fall collection in new york. the collection is edgy, modern & showcases an evolved style direction. extremely impressive; one of my favorites of the pre-fall.

collection images: narcisco rodriguez, pre-fall

the pre-fall narcisco rodriguez presented for 2011 was a let down for me. the balance of contrast, in terms of palette, was not well focused in my opinion. last spring, rodriguez presented a simplified collection with more of an understatement than his fall set for 2010; here we see him try to venture into greater depth of minimalism. while i much more favor minimalism, personally, i do feel that there is a thin line between minimal & boring. here the contrast of pale pink comes off as drab against the black pieces in the collection. i was looking for more strength & more of a wow factor, which is not what i felt for this collection. as yet, we still have the upcoming FW11 season coming in february in new york. i’ll safely assume this is a low level performance due to lack of seriousness for the recent rise of the fashion pre-season. great coats- could’ve been better.

marc jacobs, kristy + katja for numéro tokyo

shot by brian bowen smith, designer heavyweight, marc jacobs lands the cover of numéro tokyo’s january issue. appearing for issue no. 43’s cover along with marc are katja bourgis & kristy kaurova of women model management. styled conviently in marc’s own namesake label’s spring collection, the cover reads more catalog than high end editorial publication from japan. while the white studio backdrop is added against the bold tones of the striped jumpsuit & the red draped halter, the image is slightly washed out by the heavy lighting. that said, i still have high expectations for the remained of the issue. it’s always great to see designers being spotlighted for their extraordinary work; in which case marc is so righteously fitting.

daphne groeneveld + tom ford for french vogue

while tom ford makes a major comeback to the world of womenswear, appearing for the december issue of vogue paris, daphne groeneveld of women model management milan is under the scope for her age. at the age of 15, readers are questioning whether or not her heavy eyed cover shot is too sexual for a youth of her stature. hailing from the netherlands, daphne has appeared on the runway for brands like gucci, jil sander, calvin klein & givenchy. she’s landed quite a few solid opportunities to solidify her role as a new rising star in fashion & her cover her drives that force even more powerfully. with the discussion of age aside, i love the cover for it’s intent of mystique, showcasing a side shot of ford’s face. photographic credit for the cover goes to mert + marcus.
